I don't feel that there is any set time you "have" to wear black to mourn someone's death. I think that it is an individual's choice based on their grief level and acceptance. Traditionally it is appropriate to wear black to the funeral and/or viewing, but everyone deals with death in their own way. So it's up to you however long you feel comfortable wearing it, then that is the proper amount of time.

Traditionally you were to wear black for a year if your spouse, child, parent, or sibling past. Now it seems that most people don't even wear black to the funeral.
My belief is that you should wear black as long as you feel *you* should. If the person who passed was close to you, then most likely you have a good idea how long that person would feel you should wear black - let that and your feelings be your guide. Wear them only as long as you and your loved one (would have felt) would be respectful.
And may you find peace with whatever decision you make. Also, I hope you find comfort in the memories you have of your loved one while you mourn their passing. It is never easy.

In this modern age and sophistication, wearing black is not a sign of mourning. Mourning for a person closed to you is always there. Remember the good times you have for that person and be happy that person is already with the Creator.

In my culture, it is respectful to mourn until 3 months or up to a year. Again, it depends on how close you were and how much you loved them. If you were close but you didnt love them (it happens), then one month would be satisfactory.

If you are Jewish, it is 30 days. Jewish people only "officially"mourn for a parent, a spouse, a child(G-d forbid), or a sibling or half sibling.
