I had a real bad experience today with my staffy,he does'nt like the dog who lives on the end of our street,so when we walked passed the dog,he put his head out of the gate and my staffy latched on to his lip and locked his jaw and would'nt let go.So i was screaming and hitting him that did'nt work the dogs owner was strangling him to try and stop his air flow and he still would'nt stop.It was really upseting because he's such a nice dog he very good with my little boy and all people he's even scared of the cat in the garden and he never goes for any other dogs, but i think this one dog is a threat to him and he is trying to protect me.Can anyone give me good advice on how to stop a fight very quickly in case it happens again and there is no one to help me.

If you give his collar a twist you can choke him out of it.
Also, anyone owning a pit bull type dog should carry a breaking stick with them when walking. They are very simple to use and safe for your dog and the other dog.
You can find them on the Internet, but a thick, wide wooden spoon can do the trick. You will straddle your dog (if possible) and, standing over him squeeze your legs right in front of his back legs. Put the breaking stick (or wide part of the spoon) in his mouth behind his canines and give it a twist.

Edited to add... There is NO such thing as locking jaws. Pit bull type dogs have the same exact jaw structure as any other breed.

muzzle him when you intend on walking by that particular house, make him sit there only for a second or two and gradually increase the amount of time you make him sit there. This will help him learn that this is the other dogs territory and he can't behave that way. This tatic may sound mean to some people, but its a way of retraining. I just did the same thing with my Staffie.
Other wise you are going to have to trust your dog enough to pry his jaws open with your hands. I've had to do that also.

Okay now just how many aggressive pit bull ,staffordshire type dogs have been on here today? And how many other breeds with aggression problems? Count them! Time to smarten up. And why, why be so ignorant as to let a dog like this live in the same house with a child. Maybe you should re-read what you wrote. Does that not sound wrong to you? What will you say I wonder when your little boy is his next bite. Just unbelievable. Such ignorance!

I really wish I knew the answer to this question, because me and my husband just recently had to give my Pit away, because him and my Boxer kept getting into fights, and believe it or not it was ALWAYS the Boxer that started the fights. When they would fight it was nearly impossible to get them apart. But fortunately we gave him away to one of our friends, and he's being well taken care of. But you see the thing is, that he only fought with the Boxer, because the Boxer was always the instigator. My Pit loves other dogs, and has always gotten along with other dogs. Just try and keep your Pit away from other dogs. Good luck to you.

Get a remote control electric shock collar (Cabelas has them.) Turn it on HIGH. Put it on your dog when you go for a walk. If you dog attacks another dog (or person) you can push the button and shock the daylights out of the dog......

If that does not work, time to get rid of the dog. It is too vicious.

Short of a .45, nothing stops a pitbull. The cold water trick will work on any other breed, but pitbulls are bred to fight to the death. You have a ticking time bomb with a child in the house.

try to bring him in a different direction on ur walks.

if u cant bring ur staffy in a different direction try bringing something that annoys him....like a powerful spray bottle filled with water and some vinegar in it (it smells bad) or a high pitched whistle to distract ur dog

Is difficult to say, but try with a bucket of cold water.
It worked with my sister's dog once.

cold water is the best thing or something that will startle your dog im afraid thats the only way once his jaw locks he will not release it until he wants to or until something startles him.Never put in your hand as the dog may turn on you even if he is friendly but best to keep him away from the home of the other dog when you walk him..

Hope my advise helps but water has always worked for me
