Just bought a -93 Toyota pickup 4x4. I'm new to 4x4 vehicles.
Need tips on how to handle the 4x4 mode. The manual is very vauge on this.
Can I leave the front hubs locked while I'm in 2-wheel drive without damage?
Will I immidiately destroy something if I turn sharpley on pavement in 4x4 with locked hubs?
Any difference about that between 4x4 high and low?
Any other non obvious things I should know?
Thanks.

I have had many 4-wheel drives over the years so maybe I can help. If you mostly run on the pavement you should leave the hubs unlocked. In the winter when you may encounter off and on slick conditions you can leave the hubs locked, but transfer case lever in 2wd, on the pavement and it won't hurt anything. All this does is your front axles and driveshaft will turn but it won't be in 4wd till you move the lever inside to 4wd, but you will loose just a little in gas mileage due to the extra parts turning. Turning with the 4wd locked is not a good idea if the truck has good traction( dry pavement ) but if it is slick with snow, mud or ice it won't hurt anything. The difference between 4 high and low is the transfer case gear ratio. In high it will go as if in 2wd but as soon as you shift to low it will greatly reduce the speed you can go. The low is mainly for heavy pulling or slow controlled speed if you are off road. ALWAYS STOP before putting the transfer case into 4wd low, if not you will hear some noises you might not like! The best thing would be to play with it a little and become framiliar with it, get on a back road and put it in high and low and you will see the difference. The 4wd is pretty forgiving as long as you don't abuse it. Hope this helps a little and good luck.

Four wheel drive is a lot different than All wheel drive.

The ONLY time you should use fourwheel drive is off road, or in snow and ice. That's it!

Don't leave the hubs locked if the transfer case is not engaged.

Only use LOW for slow, difficult, tight terrian.

Other than that, use common sense.
