Try priceline.com -- you can choose the area you want to stay and put in how much you are willing to spend.

Personally, I think the best value is Woogoo serviced apartments e.g. WooGo Grant Hotel from $55 which are better than hotels, but have a look and see what you think:

Go to craigslist, NYC and go to vacation rentals. There is a ton of stuff there, and at much better rate than any hotel. I just got a condo for $160 in times square. Good luck.
