Politics aside, China is a wonderful place! No matter how different it is to your country, all foreigners that I know love China. You can get around even if you don't know Chinese. There are plenty of expats there, and if you want to escape the expats there are so many places to do that too.
Beijing is an interesting place - it is dirty as anything, the red tape to get anything done is a mile long, but when you are there, everything that you ever saw or heard about China suddenly comes to you and you realise that you're finally there. It's hard to describe, but when I first saw the Great Wall and stepped into the Forbidden City, you suddenly get this overwhelming feeling of history just hit you.
Chinese people are generally way nice to foreigners (unfortunately not necessarily to their own citizens) so you will have a ball.
I think what makes it wonderful is that everything is such an adventure. Almost everyday you will see things that are different from your own culture and lifestyle (eg food, architecture, people, ways of doing things), and I think that's what makes the experience so special.

I went to Taiwan once. I was in a major typhoon, without electricity. Many people were killed by window a/c units that randomly fell out of the sky from not being mounted properly. Apparently that is a major cause of death in Taiwan. It was summer and 1000% humidity. The only a/c was a window a/c unit and my arms would stick together like glue while I slept. I actually saw a man get killed by a car going the wrong way in the bus lane. There were people burning money all over the place to send to people that got ran over for their afterlife, which by the way......traffic deaths happen quite frequently. Funerals go on all day and are LOUD. The guy next to me on the flight there (which felt like a month).....well he was actually in the front of the plane of the China Air crash of 1988. The whole back of the plane died. That made me feel really great sitting next to a plane crash victim. Other than all that, it pretty much was just BORING. The nightmarket is kinda cool, but they all sell the same stuff. You can however laugh at all the english translations on their products......such as their main makeup brand is wuduh stifon. This translates to My Stiffy (not lying about that either!) Oh, and I hate rice. Note to me.....don't go back, and don't get another Chinese gf. GOOD LUCK!

I was in China for two months and I went there to live with my ex-boyfriend who was there for a year on work. Most the people seemed like they went as tourist...well there were a few natice Chinese people but they mostly talked about the big cities. I was there in Pan Yu and I was in a small tourist area (I was living in a circus, with an amusment park, zoo and corodile park nearby) I think that the best part of China was actually talking to the people and seeing them in there day to day lives and basically seeing a whole new culture and world.
As a tourist you really don't get that. You have a tour guide, and desinganted areas and sites to go to and your on a schedule. Living there you see how they live and what they do for a living.
So I think China was amazing for me because I lived there and I wasn't a tourist. My idea of traveling is not being a tourists.

I loved it, it was the most culturaly differnt place I've ever visited. And yes of course I went to the great wall. Hiking along it made my feet sore (i was 7 mo pregnant)
I also enjoyed the forbidden city and the summer palace (that may not be the proper name) very very much.
I was glad to be on a mostly guided tour, even though I usually go independent. We went out if cabs a few times and had trouble explaing where we wanted to go. (hard rock cafe, coal hill park, and tiennamen square) But the cabs were Sooooo cheap that it kinda made up for the frustration. Get a busniess card from the hotel to be sure you can get back "home" even then it took us several tries to find a cab driver who could read the card.
Oh yes - do not do the peking opera - that was just scary! We did laugh about that waste of an evening for years.

china is an interesting place to visit. however, some of the stuff there are different so it might take you a while to get used to. the great wall is a nice place to visit. but, when you go, be prepared because it's very, very long! i believe the best places in china would be either shanghai or beijing. many, many great places to go in those 2 cities. plus, the stuff in shops are alot cheaper than america

I went to China and Tibet with classmates this past June. It was the most amazing trip ever. We went to Beijing; Kunming; Lhasa, Tibet; and Hong Kong. All the cities were awesome, but the best parts were the Great Wall and the Sacred Path in Beijing. I want to go back soon, it was so much fun. You will have an amazing time there!

I am from China and live in US now. As a native Chinese and an owner of a tour company specializing in custom tours to China (JIA's Dream Tours), I want to say that the real highlight is just physically being in China! You can't grasp any idea about China simply by visiting any China town in US or meet any Chinese, or the snapshots from CNN. I am sure everyone has their own opinion about their favorite part of China, however until you are there you can't really share what they are talking about.
My favorite part is the history in Xi'an, the scenery in Guilin and of course my sweet home: Beijing with her timeless charm! I would love to hear what is your favorite part after you come back from China!
If you need any help in visiting China, please feel free to contact me through our website: Jia@Jiasdreamtours.com

Yes. The Great Wall was the best part (aside from visiting and meeting relatives). Other things that were interesting: the terracotta warriors of Xian, the scenery around Guilen, the imperial palace.

china is great, i met my wife there. beijing is great, great wall, forbidden city, summer palace, they were all amazing places to see. shanghai was cool, guangzhou near hong kong is so amazingly big you can't believe it. go there, enjoy it, it will be your most memorable experience of your life. food is cheap, travel is cheap. only remember that chinese people speak chinese, not english so if you can be with a translator or anyone who speaks both chinese and english you will be much better off. good luck, i'll be in china on feb. 15. it's hot in summer, usually over 100F, in winter homes don't have any heat so you might be a bit chilly.
