Soup - is usually thin and broth-based.

Gumbo - usually thick with lots of meats, seafood and veggies. Okra is a regular ingredient and it acts as a thickener.

Chowder - is a thick soup, usually thickened with a rue and normally contains potatoes.

You two got close.....Soup thin broth, Gumbo thickened with roux (flour based), Chowder (thickened with potatoes)
