No they are legal and popular.Well trained they are wonderful pets and among the best family dogs around(as are the stupidly illegal pit bulls)
If your planning to get 1 either buy a puppy from a reputable breeder or get 1 from the RSPCA or another well known rescue centre which will have given it temperament tests.
Don't buy 1 from an add in the paper as these are often bred by chavs to sell to other chavs as status symbols and are not bred for good temperament.NEVER buy 1 advertised as an American Staffordshire or American Staffordshire/Staffordshire cross as that really means pit bull or pit bull/staff cross which are illegal.
If your a chav or druggie or any other type of person who wants a nasty dog as a status symbol though do the world a favour and don't get a dog of any kind. However all the words in your question were spelt right so your probably not.

No!
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are a perfectly legal breed in the UK.
Pit Bull Terriers are subject to strict controls and can no longer be bred legally.
Some lowlifes and hard cases get round the law by cross-breeding their Pit Bulls with Staffies thus tarnishing the good name of the pure bred Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

People get 3 breeds mixed up. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, The American Pit Bull Terrier & The American Staffordshire Terrier. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are NOT illegal in the UK, The American Pit Bull Terrier & the American Staffordshire Terrier are illegal in the UK.
These 3 breeds may be cousins but are 3 different breeds, distantly connected. They are not the same breed.

While this is a wonderful breed with right household, it is definitely not the breed I would choose for a first time owner. They need experienced handlers and extensive training to become the best dog possible. After rescuing animals for many years, I cannot begin to tell you all the things that can go potentially wrong when this breed falls into inexperienced hands. I would advise that you look into breeds such as: Collies (either smooth or rough coated), Shelties, Labs, Skye Terrier, Boston Terrier, Whippet, etc. just to name a few diverse and practical choices. Also a nearby animal shelter may have just the perfect addition to your home or a local vet may even be able to suggest a breed for you. If you decide that you would like a specific breed, don't hesitate to call local breeders. They will gladly offer educated answers to any questions you may have. Please do not buy from a pet store as many support pet mills and you will not end up with the healthiest pet.

The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 is the most prominent of the various laws that cover dog ownership in the UK.
The act bans the breeding and sale or exchange of four kinds of dog - pit bull terriers, Japanese Tosas, the Dogo Argentinos, and the Fila Brasileiros. Cross-breeds of those dogs are covered by the law.
Any other dogs "appearing... to be bred for fighting or to have the characteristics of a type bred for that purpose" are also banned.
Under the act, a dog classed as being "dangerously out of control in a public place" can be destroyed. The owner can be fined and imprisoned for up to six months.

no they are not illegal i have one shes very old but shes a pure bred staff even though shes going gummy and suffers with athritis i still muzzle her when we go out three doors down lives a police dog handler and he loves her i think he would have told me had this law been passed recently, but its the american pit bull that is banned they both have very diff temperaments but having said that i wouldnt trust a staffy too far you need to be responsible to own any dog , but a brred like a staff requires "proper" handling and no teasing

Pure bred Staffs are totally legal. They actually make good family pets, bitches especially, and are good around young children. Not to be confused with other breeds such as Pit Bull Terriers.
