Read Genesis chapter 2 verse 7
And the Lord God formed a man's body from the dust of the ground and breathed into it the breath of life. And man became a living soul.
We are made up of body, soul and spirit!

Every thought you have originates in the brain. This includes the sense of "self" that many call a soul. The soul as many people conceive it (a separate "spirit" that resided in the body and then escapes when we die) simply does not exist.

All of us are children of God the Father, created spiritually first, and then in mortal flesh by mortal parents, with those individual spirits assigned.
We were His spiritual children before we left His presence in heaven--a pre-mortal existence.
