Because if you're buckled you're a passenger if not you're a projectile.

If the plane crashes, the plane might not explode, it might be relatively intact, but the impact still transfers through the cabin so you need them, plus if the plane hits turbulence which can be very violent you can be sent towards the ceiling and suffer permanent brain damage, and planes brakes are 100 times stronger than the engine, so if you are going 110 mph for take off and the take off is aborted, you will be thrown to the front and death might be a likely factor

I have been in planes that all of a sudden dropped several feet, if not for the seat belt, you could fly up and hit your head. Several years ago a plane had it whole top rip off in flight. Several people and a stewardess got sucked out of the plane, even a few seats got sucked out. The people that were buckled up lived through it. There are probally pictures of the plane this happened on, somewhere on the Internet. It was in every newspaper far and wide. It was a horrible sight when they were coming in for landing you could see those people in the airplane, hanging on and praying for their life's. So seat belts can save a life when you least expect it.

It's not only for crashes.
When a plane is in the process of changing altitude (e.g. take-off ,climb-out descent, landing) the plane may travel through different air masses.
This may result in turbulence.
Also, during taxi, any quick braking or turns can be dangerous if not belted.

planes fly zillions of miles every day but if you ever hit rough weather you'd know the reason for seatbelts. they are worth their weight in gold. you would get hurt seriously if you didn't have one on when you needed one. all these people are absolutely correct.

It is more for if the aircraft goes through any turbulence, you want to make sure that you have your seat belt fastened so you don't go flying out of your seat injuring yourself or someone else.
