How about none of the above. Get a Toyota or a Honda. If you are financing any of them, you will be upside down on the loan. A Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic is a much better choice. They are much more reliable, and hold their value much better. The downside being you will almost certainly have to get an older model.
The Cavalier in particular is way over priced, unless it is a loaded up Z24 coupe. Reliability has been poor, they depreciate quickly, and it is basically the same car that came out in 1996. It routinely finishes last in comparison tests. The only thing it has going for it is a loud motor that feels peppy.
Avoid the Aveo as well. You will not like this car. Slow and loud and with a cheesy interior. It is a Daewoo rebadged as a Chevy. It will depreciate rapidly, and the only real appeal is decent MPG. Reliability looks to be poor as well.
The ZX2 is not even made anymore, and was based on the lowly Escort. The design was around long enough that it actually got kinda reliable. There are enough previous generation Mazda Protege parts in it to make is one of the more reliable cars Ford made. While not a bad car, depreciation will also be steep. The interior is cramped, and the ride and handling are nothing spectacular.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of the Escorts. Ford cars are usually not overly reliable, so anytime I can steer someone away from them is a good thing. The Cavaliers are a decent car, but for the price, you might as well just get the new Aveo.

Your BEST buy is the Chevy Cavalier. Stay away from any Ford "X anything" That stands for, "Here's a new EXperimental model...you go test it at your own cost". The Aveo is not near the car the Cavalier is...like riding in a little box. The Cavalier will get you over 30MPG as well.

Hi I bought my car from a car auction in the uk and got a bargin i spent 360 pound and got a peugot 406 diesal n reg with good mileage. But you can get cars which are less than 3 or 4 years old you can get a warranty so then if you have any problems you can take it back. depends how much money you are spending and the type of car you go for Sometimes they have ex dealer cars as well which are usually better as most have a good service history with them. My advice would be to take someone with you who knows what to check as you usually get an hour to take it back if any faults found just ask when you go so in this time whoever is with you can check that everything is ok. Hope this helps a little :-)

I would definately say not to get the aveo- it rated last in almost of all motortrend's car of the year tests- cavalier is probably best for your money.

If you're considering NEW as part of your choices, I would go for it.
you have a warranty and you'll be the ORIGINAL owner.
if you go as an educated consumer, you will not be ripped.
