I carry a Springfield Micro Compact 1911 .45 cal

The Springfield is very compact, yet still fits good in a large hand. I can keep it concealed anywhere if you get the right holster, but usually just wear it on a belt slide with my shirt untucked.

It's not a cheap gun (I paid $700), but its not as expensive as it's sister gun made by Kimber. A friend of mine has the Kimber version, but for $200 cheaper, I can't tell the difference when firing them both.

I like the stopping power of the larger caliber rounds of the 45, and I also like to keep my ammo the same. On duty it's the department issued Glock 21, so when I go for practice, I only have to buy 45 ammo.

The Springfield Micro Compact 1911 .45 cal also comes with lots of bells and whisltes that you might like.

Many officers carry the same gun on and off duty. The Glock Model 22 in .40 S&W caliber has almost be come the standard police sidearm, much like to old S&W Model 10 revolver [.38 spl.] about a decade and a half ago.

I have a few, and depending on the weather and concealment method, but my favorite is my Glock 30 / .45Cal. loaded of course, and two mags on the side. Great stopping power, and attention getter. Many do not like the .45 due to the round being heavy, but really now, I hardly believe that anyone will engage in a fire fight or self defense further than 15-20 feet. Not saying its not possible, but most if not all "off duty", shootings are at close range. And for that reason I want something with stopping power, and a higher chance of not having to go to court???

For my department, even our off duty weapons are limited to an approved list. I carry a Sig P239, .40 cal. The P239 is nice and slim where I can carry it inside my waistband and cover it up with only a t-shirt.

If you are looking for a personal defense weapon that is small, reliable and powerful try a 5-shot .38 caliber hammerless revolver. Durable and dependable.

Smith and Wesson has several models.
