Mizuno clubs are the answer. Luke Donald plays Mizuno. They are brand name clubs but don't cost a fortune. My advice is to go to a local golf shop not Golfsmith or a chain type store and negotiate with the sales associate. I have a shop where I live that gets me most things for 10% over cost. You just have to know how to haggle. Most large stores don't have the ability to negotiate with the customer.
Good Luck

Try to get some idea of what kind of clubs he would like. Maybe ask his buddies or something to get an idea. If he's not a beginner, he'd probably want a good set.....which is going to cost you quite a bit. If you are looking for just the irons, you can get a good set for 400.00-700.00 but if you are going to get the woods as well, you could easily go over 1000. If your husband doesnt mind slightly used clubs, I'd look on ebay. Some good brands FYI are Mizuno,Cleveland, Taylor Made, and Callaway.......just to name a few. To get an idea on how much these clubs retail for check out www.golfsmith.com or www.edwinwatts.com. Those are just a few sites. Good luck.

I probably will get a thumbs down for this but I would get him a gift certificate to a major golf store in your area (or GolfSmith if you will be traveling to a town with a store). Why? You mentioned he is 6'4". He may need longer clubs that standard off the shelf stock. He also may need stiffer shafts depending on his swing speed. The only way he will know is to go get fitted for his clubs. Then he can pick the brand he likes.

Ebay is the way to go......You could get him a fairly nice set of irons for 300-400, a great driver for 150 or so, and a putter and 3-wood for about 50-75 a piece.
However, this is not something you want to surprise him with. Every golfer has different preferences, and needs different types of specifications in their clubs. You would probably want to get him a gift card to Dick's sporting goods or have him pick out the set. It could be a bad situation if he is a big time golfer and you buy the wrong kind of shafts, etc(players who swing fast need stiff shafts...players who swing a little slower need more of a flex shaft). I would strongly reccomend not buying him golf clubs, unless he is a total beginner and just needs some to get started. (or if he has a friend that knows exactly what he would want or need). Golf clubs are way to expensive to just go out and buy as a surprise, without knowing exactly what he needs/wants.
EDIT: definitely let him get fitted for them and take him to pick out what he wants........the surprise can be pulling up to the store and telling him to pick out clubs....haha.....good luck

I have been building clubs for around 19 years, and i have found that clones, or knock offs as they are sometimes called can be made for less than 200.00 for a whole set of irons and woods. This would be perfect for the person who doesn't play much or is not wanting to spend much on a set of expensive clubs. Also, since they are made just for him, they can be fitted for his height very easily.

Golf outlets ( Golf Galaxy, Nevada Bob's) sell previously used
clubs. Depending on your husbands playing ability, that will determine the type of clubs to buy. (cavity back, muscle back)
A safe bet is the Mizuno MP60, a forged cavity back. It has good
playability with forgiveness. Also check ebay. 499.00- 799.00

get him fitted. buy a gift certificate. they'll take a bunch of measurements, have him swing a bunch of different clubs. and he'll know which clubs he likes. you don't have to spend thousands to get a nice set. Many used OEM irons sets can be found for $300 or so. I suggest looking at Callaway, Ping and TaylorMade. They all make great game improvement clubs.
www.callawaypreowned.com i love this site.

Get him fitted out, but just take this as advice, and look for clubs which suit his size and strength. If a friend of mine can do this in the UK without breaking the bank, then it can certainly be done in the US where stuff is loads cheaper.

Your parents worked for the money to pay for their fishing thingy. You should work for the money to pay for your golf club.
