Depends on a variety of things, such as your size preference, how often you want to groom the dog, and whether you are a walker or a jogger. Just a few suggestions, without knowing much about your situation:
Small breeds
High grooming needs-Maltese, Poodle, Bichon Frise, Yorkie, Min. Schauzer
Less grooming, more energy-Pug, Boston Terrier, most other terriers, Papillon
Fairly easy keepers, not very social though-Chihuahua, Pekingese, Pomeranian
Some breeds that are a little larger that you might like to try are Cocker Spaniels, Shelties (can be snippy/noisy), or Poodle mixes (Cockapoo, Maltipoo, etc.) which you can often find at local shelters. Good luck!

I would have to agree with Lorraine. A Cavalier King Charles pup would be good. They do like a lot of attention but unlike a lot of other dogs they do not bark at the slightest sound (which is perfect for apartment living). Be sure to get a purebred though, as the Cavalier tends to have health issues with their heart and hips. If you get a mix of this breed you are just asking for trouble, as with any mixed dog. Just be very careful on who you buy from and never buy from a kennel, shelter, or pet store.

A good breed for an apartment would be a dachshund. I say this because my cousins have them and they love them. They are not overly energetic like terriers can be, do not bark too much, and are just plain entertaining! I also might recommend a cocker spaniel, I personally love them, although they can be a bit hyper at times. Any toy breed is good for apartments also because of their obvious small size, and they do not require much exercise. If you are getting a puppy, I recommend crate training, especially in an apartment so that you will get some of that pet deposit back! : ) Good luck!

Really, any of the toy breeds are fine for an apartment. Pomeranians and Chihuahuas seem to bark a lot more than the other ones.
I have a pug in a small house. She likes to go for a daily walk and will run circles around the living room and dining room when I throw the toy to her. (she rarely brings it back, she just like to chase) I was also considering a shih tzu or maltese.

Go to YAHOO! and type in "dog breed selector" Several questionnaires will come up. They will ask you about your lifestyle and preferences. I would do at least 3. This should give you a good idea about the breed good for you. Once you get it narrowed down, go to akc.com and look at the breed standard. then you may want to volunteer at a shelter or rescue so you can meet the dogs in person and see if you connect. Another resource might be to go to a dog show. Whatever you do, don't go to a pet shop or a backyard breeder

teacup or regular yorkie are good for inside pets and do well in small living spaces because theyre usually not very active or the ones Ive been around weren't at least. Plus they are really cute and you can buy cute little bows to put in their hair! haha unless you're a guy. I really want a papillon but I would think theyd need a lot of room to run around and get exercise because they seem pretty active.

I wasn't sure what type of dog to get two years ago so I visited the American Kennel Club (AKC) web site and read through all of the breeds. They do have different groups so you might want to look under the toy group for a small dog. It took a while but we knew as soon as we read the description what type of dog we wanted (one of the hounds). We then did a lot of research to find a breeder we were comfortable with. Do your research and know what you're getting yourself into. All dogs have different tempers and needs. Make sure you pick a breed that will best suit you and one that you will be able to take good care of. Ask lots of questions of the breeder. Good luck!

When I decided to get my dog I did alot of research. I wanted a small inside dog that did not shed and had a good temperment. I believe I used either the petco website or the pedigree website and they ask you several questions about what your interested in and match you up with a dog. Mine is a bichon frise and is absolutely everything I ever wanted.

I would not get a lhasa apso, pomeranian, or shih tzu if i were you. they're barkers and if your in apt it may make your neighbors cranky.
pugs make great indoor and apartment dogs. they typically sleep for 18 hours a day, so they'll most likely sleep when you are out and about. they also don't like going on long walks and they don't like being outside for too long in hot or very cold weather. they aren't territorial dogs, so they won't cause problems with your neighbors either. they love everyone and all the attention they could get.

I have a yorkie. We originally got him because we wanted a dag and we lived in an apartment. He is so friendly and funny! Yorkshire terriers make great lap dogs. The only thing is with all other dogs too, is you have to potty train them. You can get these things called wee wee pads for them to go the bathroom on, if you are away. yorkies are recommended for apartments and dont shed. they are the second most popular dog in the U.S!
I hope you find a dog you like.
Good luck!
