was given the command to proceed with format. I entered Y and an error states "Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPEN HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on the volume?" Nothing is running on my computer. I enter Y for yes and the command prompt closes and nothing happens.. What should I do??

If you are attempting to format the system drive while booted into windows it won't work this way. You need to boot from a livecd like System Rescue CD. Download the ISO from their site (open source freeware) and burn the image to cd. Boot from the cd and either run freedos or boot into linux and run gnuparted. Gnuparted is a graphical partition manager tha alloows you to delete partitions, create or resize them as well.

Why not just do a fresh format of the drive by starting a new Windows installation. It's hard to format the drive if your using it at the time.

If you are working windows from another drive, then right click on c drive and select format.

It sounds like you are trying to format the hard drive you are using to boot from.

How did you get to the place where you entered format c: ? Did you boot from a floppy or from a CD? If not, you can not format the drive you booted and are running from.

in order to do this, you'll need to boot from a start-up disc or from cdrom. you'r getting this error because this is done in DOS MODE and you'r trying to do this when you are on the operating system.
