Why is it that going out with someone with an age gap is more accepted in society when they're both older?

Theres a big difference in maturity and life experience between a 16 year old and a 20 year old. (plus in most places it illeagl.) But if your 32 and 36 you have alot more life experience that puts you more on the same playing field. Same thing holds true if you have kids and they don't.
