I just had a shower and money was my favorite, sorry if that sounds bad, but it is just what you need when you have a lot of wedding expenses. i would give around $30.00

Just because you are not that close doesnt mean it has to be a thought less gift. After all it is your boyfriends sister and how you treat her may affect your relationship with your boyfriend.
Not saying you need to spend a ton of money on her but take some time and thin about it. If you were getting married would you want yet another picture frame? Or another vase??? Do you know naything about her? If she likes to cook get her some great cookbooks, if she is a born shopper a gift certificate so she buy what ever she wants.

Checking out the registry is a good route, but one gift which is easy is to buy a basket and fill it with a set of wine glasses/champagne flutes and a bottle of wine/champagne and maybe some candles. This way they are set for some romance and can use the basket to hold stuff around their new place. You can spend however much you want on this, I usually spend about $25 in total though :)

I would suggest checking out their registry. If there is nothing on the registry that fits your budget - maybe pick up some cook books for them, seems everyone needs those! I just attended a bridal shower and the average gift range was about $50-$100 (depending on closeness to couple).

How about a box of No Doze if the fiance is a nerd? Just kidding. A gift card with a wedding card is good.

She must be registered somewhere! The stores should be listed on the shower invitation. Since you're not close, I would spend between $30 - $50. Just my opinion!

Check her registry....
I would say $50 is the norm... but you can take $25 and make it look like $50. Find out where she registered or what she wants... compare it to different stores... buy the cheapest.
Also check coupons and sales... store like Macy's have great sales and let you use additional coupons on the items!!

One of the best gifts I got at my wedding shower was a copy of The Joy Of Cooking. I still use it weekly and I've been married 13 years.
