So they can hear that extra crunchy sound when they crash....Great question by the way.

It's obvious isn't it. The standard Kamikazi plane starts down the runway minus a pilot. The Kamikazi pilot then has to chase the plane and get in it before it reaches the end of the runway. The helmet helps the pilot run in adverse weather conditions. A smooth helmut always cuts though the air cleanly.. Ask any EL AL pilot....
Hope this helps...

Proper [instilled] training causes a person to do things automatically.. even when it does not make any sense.
1.) doctor sterilyzing needles for the dying...
2.) Kamikazi pilots wearing helmets to their death...
Interesting....

This is one of the age old questions that has always baffled me.
The only thing I can come up with is so they don't bang the noggin on any equipment while en route. Those panels are sharp, and I'm sure could cause lack of consciousness if smacked the right way.
If I were one, I would nix the helmet - who wants to die with bad hair?
:)

At first I laughed at the thought of kamikaze pilots wearing helmets, but then I thought about it. I think the reason they probably wear helmets is because flying is pretty loud. I bet wearing a helmet helps drown out the noise.
I'm no expert. It's just a guess on my part.

A fighter pilot wears a helmet, fullstop. Whatever he intends to do during the flight is besides the point. :-) In any case, I think they needed to be able to communicate with each other to find the target etc.
Did you know that there is an association of WWII kamikaze pilots who didn't fully reach their goal? You might find mention of them if you surf a little on the net. You could ask them your question!

Apparently WW2 helmets carried the earphones for the radios, therefore without the helmet the pilot would not know where to go, or what to attack. xxx

When the plane is shaking violently it is possible for the pilot's head to bang into something and from that he can get a severe injury.

You know what, I've seen this question before on "Answers". The leather helmets that they wore contained the radio earphones. Their commanders back at base had to guide them to the target.

Their helmets were simply leather caps with hearing protection -- they were not approved by the NFL.

Didn't they wear those funny bandana things and not helmets?
Anyway it's one of those strange un-answerable questions, bit like,
"Who do doctors steralise needles before injecting criminals with poison?"
