I'm interested in making whole wheat bread. Do the machines work well? Do they save money over buying loaves of bread? Are they simple to use, do they work well and are they easy to clean?

Thanks.

The answer to all your questions is; yes.

You save some money. It costs me about $1 to make a loaf of bread.

Machines vary. You don't have to buy an expensive one. I use a "Breadman" machine. I've had it about 5 years. I use it 2-3 times a week. It's easy to clean and use. The machine comes with a recipe book which is a great place to start in learning to use your machine. There are a lot of cookbooks just for bread machine bread.

Nothing compares to home baked bread ~~ hot, with butter!!

A lot of the answers to your questions depend on the breadmaker and the recipes you use. I've owned a couple of breadmakers over the past ten years, and I'm really happy with the Welbuilt horizonal loaf machine that I have right now.

It's got different settings for various types of bread, and its thermometer seems pretty accurate. Because it's a horizontal baker, it's a little more difficult to clean, but I find the quality well worth the extra trouble.

You probably won't save any money by baking your own whole wheat bread because the cost of the ingredients will be as much or more than that of a storebought loaf. However, the quality of the homemade bread is so much better in terms of fiber and freedom from additives. . .plus, the taste and smell are fabulous!

A bread machine is usually pretty simple to use, whether you're working with a storebought mix (which can be pretty good, BTW) or baking from scratch. Just make sure that you add the ingredients in the order given on the box or in the recipe so that everything will incorporate fully during the mixing cycle.

Experiment with different recipes and different brands of flours and yeasts until you come up with a combination that works best for your machine. Happy baking!

Im not sure cuz the last time i used a bread machine was when i was like 5... and it was a smaller cheap one. I want to buy one though, and if u get a good one then they work great. I saw one at the store the inside is clean and im pretty sure u can take it out just like a bowl. Bread machines might save a couple bucks but its alot more of a hassle if thats why your getting one..They are usually bought by ppl that make homemade bread with there own recipes. The bread tastes a hell of alot better then store carboard bread.(depending if u are any good at it) The ingredients for normal bread arnt hard to get, theres only a couple. But i think its fun making bread if your board or wanna try makin your own recipe or sumthin.
Im no expert though.

You will not, in general, save money. A loaf of bread in a store typically costs the same as the ingredients, plus or minus.

The benefit of a bread machine is that you can make bread how you want it. No chemicals. Wanna throw in little bits of chicken livers? Sure! You can, even if no bakery will do it.

Plus, you can eat fresh and hot bread.

They ARE easy to use. You just put in yeast, flour, water, and other ingredients, turn it on, and go away for several hours.

Most are easy to clean. Mine has a non-stick coating, so all I do it give it a quick rinse after the bread comes out.

The biggest downside is that it takes up counter space.

OMG yes! My mom has had one for years and she makes all kinds of breads including whole wheat. I have had one about 5 years. You can make any kind of bread, even rasin...you can make pizza crust dough....you can make dough for rolls...etc...the settings and kinds of bread are endless! They are wonderful! YOU can set timer of what time you want it ready and come home to a wonderful smelling bread baking. Be careful though, if the bread is done before you get home it gets soggy! take it out right away!

Oh yeah, and the inside where the bread bakes pulls out and you HAND wash it! VERY easy to clean, mine has never stuck!

It does save money over the years and it tastes a HECK of a lot better than store bought bread! They are not very expensive anymore and you can kinds with a lot of features or few features.

i've used breadmakers over the last few years & they r terrific, easy to clean, different shaped loaves, in my maker u could do pizza dough, gnocchi, jam, pasta, gluten free bread, here in Australia u can buy boxes of bread flour & all u do is add the yeast & water & away u go, & i tried it the other way to, like making it from scratch, they all turn out good, it used to cost me $1.25 per loaf but i can now buy freash bread for 89c a loaf so i no longer make it, but its worth the investment if u are saving money per loaf. happy baking.
