I would definitely say, ask the owners. If anyone is going to know how nice a dog is or isn't, it will be the owner. Have the owner come out with the dog beside him/her, and talk with the owner at first. When things are comfortable, place your hand palm up below the dog's face, allow the dog to then sniff your hand and accept you as a 'friend' before reaching over the dog's head to pat it.

Well if it was Nice it Would be wagging it's tail for sure !! Is it's tail standing upright? If so that's not a god sign either!! ever go up and pet a strange dog for sure and if it comes up to you then put your hand down in front of it's face to let it smell your hand first and see how it reacts! If the dog is just standing and watching you then I'd say beware ! But look at the tail next time too, straight up is a dominant stand! Just don't mess with it !! And never pet a dog on top of its head !! ( The way we were taught as a kid! )Always pet them on there side !

Hi,
Some dogs are not barkers and just stare, than bite. Without seeing this myself it is hard to tell. The best way not to get bit is do not stare back at her, watch out of the corner of your eye and basically ignore her. Also don't challenge her by getting into her space or property she is "guarding". Ex: If you need to walk up to porch to put paper there and she is on walkway make a wide birth around her and if there is a negative reaction from her slowly back -a -way, don't run, and again don't stare. If when you get close to her she wags tail, and her eyes soften don't pet her until you know for sure just talk soft to her and go on about your business. Brenda

Well the dog is watching you as she maybe not sure what you will do..some dogs will do when they are not too sure what that person is up to. She could bark or do the other things, but for this point..if you want to see if she is friendly ..just walk very slowly up to her..but watch her eyes and tail. The number one thing is to do next is to put just the back of your hand down so she can sniff it..if you do get close and she backs off then she afraid..then don't do anything ESL but back off and go on your way..if you see the owner or the next door nabour ask them about the dog

If the dog is on a chain, i always talk to it. If it responds well to my voice, i go up and pet it. If the dog is NOT on a chain, or in a fence, i ignore it. If the dog responds nicely to my voice..wags it's tail, looks friendly, then i would go up and pet it. If it continues to just stare, or starts barking, i just keep walking. But i am pretty bold when it comes to dogs. I will pet almost any dog. But i have never gotten bit this way. I have only got bit by a dog while i was working with it in a vet clinic, or in someones house who said the dog is nice, then it bites me..

If you don't know, then assume its not nice. Is it behind a fence? If so, stop and call the dog over in a nice voice. If it comes over and wags it's tail, you're probably ok. But you never know so you should probably avoid the dog or talk to its owner and ask if its ok to pet their dog.

There isn't any way to tell if that is mean or nice behavior until you try to approach it. I wouldn't recommend that though. If it isn't yours then just stay away for your own safety just in case. You never can tell now a days how an animal that you don't know has been raised. If you feel like it might just run after you out of no where then try to keep a far distance between you and that house when you pass it.

you never know with dogs so I would approach with caution. I always ask the owner if I can pet their dog before I just jump right in, no matter what the breed is. Try to talk to the owner and find out.

Basic rule of thumb....if the dog isn't yours, leave it alone.
Too many people get bit because they just walk right up to a dog and think they can pet it. The dog is in its yard, and will probably bite you. Leave it and any other dog alone unless you ask permission from the owner if you can pet ;the dog.
