Has anyone had any success in contacting and sharing information with relatives out of the country? I'm in the US and have tried contacting some of my husband's distant cousin's in Italy. Unfortunately, I'm afraid my message may have been distorted with the translation service I used (sent letter in both English and Italian). One relative took the letter to the local school English teacher, who emailed me and suggested contacting a specific cousin, which I did, but received no reply.

I would love to communicate via email, but am unsure of how to go about doing that. I've spent lots of time, money, and energy with little results. I would really like to get in touch with these folks and would welcome any suggestions anyone has to that end.

Hey Amber,

So far, I have not called Italy or any other non-english speaking country.

For Italy, you should have a conference call with suspected relatives, try hiring an Italian Language Teacher, for the call. You will need someone either there or at your location that can facilitate communication.

Here are some great sources for digging up Italian ancestors, and finding current numbers. This also sounds like a great excuse to take a trip to Italy!

I have the same difficulty. I have family in Slovakia. I don't speak or write their language, and they don't know any English. If you can't find a reliable translator, it's very hard. Then, of course, the people on the other end have to WANT to communicate with you. Keep trying. It's worth the effort. If you have a contact (the English teacher), perhaps you could ask that person to act as a go-between to make things a little easier. Try sending a packet of some postcards or photos; that might get the relatives interested in you and where you live---kind of a conversation starter.

There's a web site "genes reunited" have you tried it??

You can also try writing an open letter to the local newspaper in the area where you believe your family are from...
we get letters in our local rag all the time...
and I am willing to bet that somebody will always reply with info... .
