My own experience is that it was hard to get my GP to recognise the problems I had. Even after breaking down in front of him, he just sent me to see a councillor to deal with "Low Mood".
Eventually I managed to get another GP to give me Anti-depressants and my usual GP started to see things differently after that. I have seen a Psychologist now, which has helped.
I think most people get treatment (pills) directly from their GP. Waiting lists to see a Clinical Psychologist are very long. It took 6 months before I saw mine and that was only by chance - someone else cancelled. At the point I phoned up I had hardly moved up the list, so I got in by luck.
I wouldn't be scared of visiting your GP to get help. Fluoxetine is helping me.

well its simple, no doctor would prescribe or they shoudnt emmediatly until u go see a psychiatrist, because most cases of depression is where an identifiable trigger event, a "life event” occered and that can be treated with therapy.
But some depression has no idenifiable trigger and that is treated with anti deppressant drugs.
Now through my research, i found out to be able to take these anti depression drugs u have the syptoms from a list!! that the doc has , if u have more than 4 or 5 of the syptoms in his list then u can be taken into medication
http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/CG23/quickrefguide/pdf/English
heres the guidance! u can have a look at the more complicated forms if u like here
http://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/CG23#documents
now after u go to a therapist and he confrims ure depression is genetic or it cannot be solved by therapy then the doctor will admit u to drugs.
but these drugs have side effects so it will take years to find the perfect drugs for the depression its not easy and i would say it should be the final resort to any1 depression through personal experience and research and study.
hope this has helped!! if you have any more questiosn dont hesitate my email is noname_2001_2002@yahoo.co.uk
ok good, do u fel any better? after seeing the consellor?? after this treatment ask him/her weather ure problem is genetic or is it a life event which is causing my depression??
cause u dont have to be admitted to drugs,
it seems like u want to take the pain away by drugs but let me tell u, the pain lessons but it will still be there!
woudnt it be better if u could resolve it ureself! in ure head with the help of ure friends, family and the consoller, its a great feeling once u feel happy and can continue with ure life again,
i feel for u my friend i am going through massive depression at the moment and my life has just Stopped!! or feels like it!!,
continue ure therapy and i hope it will resolve ure depression, cause through experience drugs only help ppl with genetic probelms.
P.s through more research no1 knows why the body gets depressed all we know is that we can reduce this depression chemically.
u can do it, !! ure life with antidepressant wont feel good, hell ive taken the strongest antidepressant ever, cocaine
hehe bet u didnt know that!! and that doesnt help either!! the pain will always be there if u dnt remove it ureself.
take it easy

Generally, you would tell the doctor everything - all your symptoms and what you've already tried to do yourself for help, such as seeing a therapist, natural remedies etc. Make a list of your symptoms and he will probably ask you questions, such as when did all this start? etc. Just tell him everything you know so he can make a good judgement on whether to treat you himself or send you to a specialist for further diagnosis. He will probably prescribe you anti-depressants if he feels they will help, and/or calming tablets for anxious moments.
If he feels your symptoms require a specialist, such as if you felt very suicidal or if you are experiencing hallucinations or other deeper symptoms, he may refer you to a specialist if the initial medicines have little or no effect on your symptoms.
Don't be afraid to seek help. When you are suffering like this, it is hard to think clearly and you may lack confidence to go and seek help on your own, but for your own sake...do it as soon as you can. The quicker you move, the quicker you can start to feel better and "normal" again. Take a friend with you if you want, but writing your problem here means you are aware enough to know you need more help than what you're getting now.

At my first appt., we did a urine test to confirm pregnancy. The dr. will also do a pap smear, so be prepared with clean drawers! They'll check your blood pressure and take note of your weight so as your pregnancy progresses, they can see if you and your baby are growing normally. They'll ask you about the dates of your last period just to get an idea of your due date and they'll ask you tons of ??? concerning family health history, so be knowledgeable about who has high blood pressure, asthma, cancer etc. in your family. They'll ask you if you've begun taking prenatal vitamins and other medications you might be on. There's going to be A LOT of information, but only to your benefit! The more you know, the easier it'll be! Then you'll probably have to schedule an ultrasound to confirm the approximate delivery date. Oh, and they'll let you know when you need to make all your other future appts. Does this help? Congrats on the new baby!

If you went to a medical doctor and not to a Psychiatrist, I would ask for a referral. Many family doctors mean well but they are not trained enough in the field of mental illness. Many times the diagnosis you stated can be treated without medication but may need therapy or and adjust to the way you live such as diet and environment. If medication is recommended then it may be for a short time or it could last a long time. But the key is to get therapy to learn coping skills so you can get off of the medication. Look at your spiritual health as well. Many times if you are sick spiritually you will become sick physically and / or mentally.

The GP will ask you several questions about your lifestyle and any particular events (without going into too much detail about them with you) that may be causing your depression etc. Something is certainly causing it and he will more than likely put you on some form of anti-depressant immediately. Dont worry about this, they will just take the edge off things for you to help you cope better and tell yourself you dont need to be on them for ever - you wont, they will not solve the problems just keep you going until you do. You do really need to see a psychologist to start off with, you may need a psychiatrist but advise your GP you are willing to see a psychologist to talk things through. Get one you feel comfortable with, you may need to try a couple out first. Seeing a psychiatrist is no big deal it doesnt mean you are a nutter. You are just a human being like the rest of us, I have got a lot out of seeing these professionals, I had all the things you have described, you need to get to the bottom of why you are feeling this way, you will get better, life is for living - good luck. Dont ever go off anti-depressants cold turkey, you will need to wean off them gradually when feeling better, take the advice of your GP on this.

Some docs will treat this in the office and others may advise that you see a specialist. Most of the docs I work with will treat it themselves unless they feel you need more help than they can give you.

they just sit you down and talk to you, then they discuss what is the best way for you to go with this....there's always more than one option...and antidepressants are much better these days and so is the care that the gp can give you whilst being on them....they usually want to see you at least once a month to see how you are doing....don't worry they arent gonna kart you off in a white jacket or anything....I have suffered with depression and once you get to the dr you generally feel better because now something can be done!
good luck and things do get better x

Your family doc will talk to you about what's going on. He can diagnose you and give you a prescription or he may suggest that you go and see a specialist depending on your situation and how depressed you seem to him.

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.
Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life
