I'm a hairdresser and your right that is very common deal, that woman comes to a hairdresser and she says that I want to cut it but keep the lenght. It usually means that they want to have some sort of change but aren´t ready to cut it that much. I usually cut them with a razor to make layers but I will leave the lenght in, that means that I take only the top part of hair little bit lighter so it is easier them to style it. If hair is very long from everywhere it kind of lays into a scalp and looks like it is dirty and when they are trying to style it, for example to put curls they will stay only couple of hours and then come flat again, When the hair is textured it gets more volume. That is my point of view hahah:)Hopefully you got answer what you were looking for:)

If you notice, people probably don't say cut anymore. They usually say trim. A trim is when you keep more or less the same length, but just get rid of split ends. Recently, through the popularity of layers, people say that they're gonna get their hair layered which means it'll still be the same length, except have their hair in steps instead of a blunt hairstyle.

Because we don't want yucky split-ends. They're unhealthy. And If we have split ends that must be rid of and love the length of our hair, then we ask 'just cut the ends.'

Do you mean get their hair cut, but keep as much of the length as possible? Girls who like their hair long, keep it trimmed so the dead ends get cut off and their hair looks nicer.

Women need to have their hair trimmed up because if we don't than it begins to look ratty from the split ends. Which is literally when the ends of our hair split in half. It looks better when it is clean cut.

They just want it trimmed and shaped up a little. Get rid of then yucky ends and stuff...
Think about it, guys who have very short hair still get hair cuts even though they are only getting a little bit taken off right :)

Everyone has a little thing called spilt ends on there hair and if neglected they affect the condition of your hair.
But then again don't most men just go and have the same hair cut as well? Pot calling kettle black!

To keep their hair healthy, without cutting it short. People normally get their ends trimmed all-over every month or two.

I'll speak for myself re. this one: i've long black wavy hair. When i get 'sick' of it/my look/my face but don't really want to be too drastic and change the colour or the length of my hair, i figure if i get a nice different style.......... then i'll REALLY feel different and look different. It's a twisted female thing.
PS: i fail everytime and noone notices i went to hair salon :(
