Well, the obvious is that Scotch is distilled in Scotland and Bourbon is distilled in Kentucky. But that doesn't tell you much about the taste. Scotch is made from malted barley and Bourbon is made from corn. That's the difference in a nutshell, who really needs all the technical answers. In my own opinion, Scotch has a sweeter (almost caramel-like) taste and Bourbon is more bitter (but not bitter in a bad way, just has more of a kick). I love both, but if I had to pick, I choose bourbon. Maker's Mark produces a fine bourbon that is reasonably priced.

Bourbon is only made from Kentucky and a few parts of Tennessee that are close to Kentucky. Anything else is a different type of whiskey, even if it tastes similar and uses exactly the same ingredients. This is much like how true champagne only comes from a certain region in France. The rest are sparkling wines.

Both bourbon and scotch are hard liquors, but bourbon lends itself to more mixed drinks, while scotch is best taken straight, neat, or on the rocks. There are flavored varieties of both, such as Drambuie. There are also varieties of both which people tend to think are great, great drinks but which taste like the inside of an oak barrel. Blech.

Best advice, try a few (assuming you're old enough, blah blah blah) and see what you like.

To be called Scotch, it must be distilled and bottled in Scotland. If it's not, it's just plain whiskey.

Also, Scotch is made from malted barley, while bourbon is made from grain.

It's basically what it's made of and where. They are both types of whiskey (or "whisky").

It's not Scotch if it's not made in Scotland. It's made with barley.

Bourbon is made corn and other grains. It's typically made in Kentucky, although not necessarily.

aside from where they are made, the biggest difference is the grain they are distilled from. They are as different as gin and vodka.
