I think he meant that it is fine to ask for God's blessing and to ask for his help, but that we must understand that, ultimately, it is up to us to do the things that we believe God would have us do. So, for example, if we want to rid the world of hunger, we can ask for God's blessing and his help, but we shouldn't expect that God is going to do it. Rather, God will work through us as WE make the effort to rid the world of hunger (or otherwise make the world a better place).

I believe this leads us back to free will; meaning that some believe that God doesn't take an active role in the earthly events. Humankind will do as they believe and reap the benefits or suffer the consequences....J/S "Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own." (1) (excerpt inaugural speech) J. F. Kennedy, Sr.
