Whatever breed you chose, do try and find a purebred rescue. They do exist. The dogs are trained and tested to make sure they are worthy of adoption and they are kept in foster homes, not a loud shelter. Sure, you can go buy a brand new puppy from a breeder, but what about adopting a young-adult purebred? 1-3 years old, house broken, trained, and mature enough to not have temperament surprises. You don't have to go through the frustration of training a newborn puppy. Yes, puppies are cute, but for a first time dog owner its probably better to go with a young adult. Little dogs and terriers like to bark. English bulldogs have A LOT of health issues, as do French Bulldogs. Try a few 'breed selector' quizzes. There's one on the Animal Planet site that links to good information on each breed. You might discover a breed you never considered is the perfect fit.

I have an Italian Greyhound. She is awesome. She never smells. She won't be a big dog either. The max weight would be about 15 lbs, but since she is petite, she will be about 12 max. I use doggy wipes in between baths. She has very little fur, but I don't know if this is the reason for the lack of smell. I only bathe her after the dog park to get the dirt off. Italian Greyhounds are very excitable, so they need lots of exercise. They love to play a lot, too. Mine doesn't bark unless she's instigating a chase with the cat. It is also possible to litter box train an Italian Greyhound too.

If you dog had an odor then he probably had some sort of skin issue that was never reolved. Most dogs do not smell unless they need a bath or a yeast infection on their skin. Do some research on each breed to decide which one is right for you and your family

If you dog smelled there was probably something medically wrong with him, food allergy etc. If in proper health dogs shouldn't smell. I have a lab, and she gets a bath twice/year and she doesn't smell. I would recommend a toy poodle as a dog that needs constant grooming and doesn't shed. Most retrievers should not be bathed with soap as it severely dries out their skin.

If your dog was that smelly he probably had a skin problem that went untreated! Bathing and brushing helps too! You should bathe twice a month, you can do it more if you use a skin and coat conditioner. No dog (that is groomed properly) should smell that bad unless something is wrong.

Schnauzers are not super smelly. They are also a non-shedding breed (well, as far as any of them are). They are good with kids, super smart etc. My standard doesn't get bad dog breath, and really only needs to be bathed if she gets in something. otherwise, brushing and stripping the coat removes all the dirt and excess oil. My favourite is the standard schnauzer, but you should defintely go visit with them to make sure it's the dog for you. :)

Any of the sight hounds are great - no doggy smell. My greyhounds only get bathed twice a year and even then, I don't know what for. Afghans, whippets, salukis, pharaoh hounds, Ibizans, also don't have any smell to them.

Dogs don't ,moult they shed. Labs don't generally smell bad if they are healthy and groomed properly. I don't know of any breed that has less odor than another when healthy and groomed properly.
