Most vets prefer to spay a b1tch about halfway through her cycle - so, if your b1tch is usually in season every 6 months, have her spayed 3 months after her season finishes.

You are perfectly correct to say "neutered" - it's a term that can be used for either sex.

You should check with your vet some say 2 weeks after the end of her season but some say that she must be half way through her cycle - ie. about 3 months after her season has ended and 3 months before her next season is due.
Always check with the vet that will be treating the dog as they all seem to have different ideas !!

You can safely spay anytime after they are out of season.

No responsible vet will spay during a heat cycle. They uterus is too engorged with blood to risk it. Only in an emergency situation should you even consider this.

And some vets do refer to it as a neuter regardless of gender. But we typically call it a spay in bitches :)

A b1tch has to wait 3 months after she finishes her season before she can be neutered (which incidentally for the uninformed means Having testicles or ovaries removed, so covers both sexes)!!

Curtesy of e-look dictionary:

Definition: Neuter:

1. [adjective] having testicles or ovaries removed

No reputable vet will spay a ***** whilst she is in heat, in the UK anyway, but as long as she is out of heat, and is over 6 month of age, it doesn't matter when she was last in season, as long as the ***** is in good health, the vet will lspay her.

You can get your female dog spayed at any time now. Some vets don't like to do spaying when the female is in heat because everything's swollen up at that time. But if her heat's finished, get her in for surgery as soon as you can.

And thanks for being a responsible dog owner.

i had mine done the Month after she finished her first heat as this was recommended by the vet.

My advice is DONT take her to a pets at home vet! We had to have her done twice (yes I'm telling the truth) because they reckoned the first time there was no ovaries to remove!!!! Strange!!!!!!

My vet recomends half way between seasons, so about 3 months after her last season. If your girl is fit & healthy she will take no time at all to recover.

My vet always said it was best to wait at least two or three months to allow the uterus to return to normal size, otherwise, there may be too much bleeding, making it harder on the dog.
