While it is traditional for a medical student to start their studies at a medical school immediately following their undergraduate studies (~22 years old) this is certainly not set in stone. Because of the many factors that go into being admitted into a medical school (high MCAT scores, research experience, etc..) it is not uncommon for individuals to "pad" their applications in the first year or two following their undergraduate studies. There are also those individuals who choose to pursue a degree in medicine as a second carreer. It is not uncommon to see a student in their late 20's or early 30's, however, one must be cautious of earning an MD too late in their life, as med school tuition will require the same amount in loans one would expect to take out for a home loan. It might be difficult to convince a creditor to back such a loan if an individual is already closer to retirement than they are to their teens.

The average is 24. Medical students graduate with BS's at 22. They get out of med school at 26. Forget about a few people. Also forget Dougie Hauser.

18-24years old

i know some started as young as 18 years old here in the Philippines...
16=highschool
18=premed

but usually... bachelor's degree is 4 years... so most freshmen med students are 20.. then med proper is 4 years..so that is 24

Most are around 22, however these days many are older. I started at 26 and that was in 1993. 30% of my class was older than the fresh 22 year old grad.

18 years = High School
22 years = bachelor's degree
26 years = 4th year med student

So 24 years old is the average -- maybe 25.
