I am looking for a dog under 20 lbs. that would get along with children and a Lab. We are thinking about a Spanial of some kind. Any other suggestions would be great! If you could give me a website to visit so I can see them that would also be good. We don't like the pug or Chuawawa looks either so none of those. Thank you!

Go to the shelter and pick up a mutt. Who cares what kind? You sound like real breed snob.

Try looking on http://dogbreedinfo.com/ They have all kinds of different dog breeds with a description and pictures. You can also take a breed selector quiz. Other than that, you can always check your local animal shelters for dogs that are in need of a good home. You can go to http://www.petfinder.com/ to find dogs that are in shelters in your area that are in need of a home. You can type in the breed, age, size, and gender that you are looking for. Good Luck, i hope this helps!!
If you want a small spaniel try looking into Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, or a Tibetan Spaniel. They are both small, and VERY cute!
*I feel that this is Important!* I also wanted to add that you don't sound like a breed snob. Researching different breeds before you decide to get a dog is what you are SUPPOSED to do. More people need to do that before they aquire a dog (like people in apartments who get a border collie cause they are cute). That way you know what you are looking for, whether it be a pure breed dog from a good breeder, or a mix from a shelter (though most shelters also have a lot of pure breed dogs.) Once you know what breeds you like, you will know more about a mixed breed dog you end up with. It is nice to see someone putting so much effort into finding the right dog for your family!!!

Tay,
It sounds like you need to do some research on different breeds. Try going to www.akc.org and look at the different breeds there.
You are doing the right thing by looking at the dogs before making your decision. Just keep in mind that just because a dog is "cute" doesn't mean it will make a good family pet. Some of the best pets are mutts. You may also want to check with your local shelter to see if they have any dogs that were surrendered that would fit your family.
A Shih Tzu may be for you. They are hypoallergenic dogs and don't shed.
Kudos to you for doing the right thing for your family and your future pet! Good luck finding the right dog. Please let us know what you choose...I'm interested to know.

Hi, I have a Boston Terrier with a American Bulldog and 2 children. My boston is totally great with my children especially my toddler they are the best of friends, Maybe a cocker spaniel, english cocker spaniel, britanny spaniel, king charles spaniel, french bulldog, english bulldog, jack russel, welsh springer spaniel. Try looking up and doing a dog breed selector on the internet to see which dog would suit your lifestyle. Good Luck!

A lot of terriers make good pets for kids, high energy and love to play. The Carn Terrier is generally sweet tempered and great around kids. Keep in mind that terriers (as a group) like to dig, so watch out for your gardens.

I have a Jack Russell/Rat Terrier and a cat. He's about 11 lbs. and full grown. The best darn dog ever!!!!!! He's smart, friendly, playful, excellent with children and other animals, energetic, loving, well-behaved, and very well-disciplined. Not to mention he's a mama's boy, and is very loyal. So I would definitely recommend this kind of dog.

Pomeranians are wonderful family pets. They are smart ,clean, easy to train and can live to be 25 years old! They shed very, very little and if you brush 1-2 X's per week you won't have any shedding. They have a continuous Smile on their face. They are Loyal and eagar to please ,They have no doggy oder but if by chance they get into trouble pop them right in the sink and they love to be groomed. They do not require lots of activity ,but they love to play inside or out. They are fine with children and other pets even cats.Their Personality makes up for their size.I have been raising these Royal Beauties for 16 years and have enjoyed every moment of this 24/7 job.If you would like more information please click my logo and I will be happy to tell you even more.Alot of people on this site are very rude and touchy about their Breed and their Registration ,please do not judge everyone because of these sad people.Good luck with your search!!!!!!

I wouldn't go with a spaniel, they can be too high-strung for children. Cocker spaniels also when they get nervous have a tendancy to pee. I would look at either maltese or a malti-poo. They are very cute and they are hypo-allergenic, so if you or the children have any allergies they won't bother you with that. They also don't shed. Which is a bigg plus. I have one and she is great around my two young kids.

check out the animatch.ca website - we've got a few dogs over the years from them and they were all terrific - Animatch really goes the extra mile to make sure they get the best match for the families and the dogs. when the kids were younger we even volunteered walking the dogs for them - that was really fun for all of us. I was on the site today and I think I remember a couple of spaniel types.

I think that a beagle or a schnauzer would be great. You can find a lot of dogs on the website listed below.
