I was chased by a dog and bitten on the calf last month while running in the neighborhood. I didn't know who the dog belongs to(no tag, not on leash, but has a collar) and was not able to hold the person accountable for it.
So it is legal for me to injure or even kill a charging dog not on leash if I decide to carry a knife for protection?

formerly in the military and had quite experience in knife and hand to hand combat background. I think I can take on a dog if I had some sort of weapon, but bare hand is a little bit harder to do.

quite frankly, I would rather go face to face with a dog whose owner does not care to leash it than using a pepper spray and run away.

I would think so. It is self-defense after all. And the person who owns the dog is the one who would be held responsible. You should report that to the police or the humane society in your area.

I would carry a hypersonic whistle if I were you to thwart off dogs, perhaps even pepper spray. But you are correct, it is self defense, if the dog is perceived as a threat.
I don't advocate hurting animals, but if encounter an aggressive one and have no other option...you kick the snot out of that dog. And you keep on until he runs away.
I've had this problem at our local park with dogs on the loose and no owner in sight. Your dog gets aggressive around my kid, you're gonna miss your dog.

Well if you want to be for sure, contact the police let them know about the problem and ask them what you can do to protect yourself that is legal.
Like in my town, it is legal to kill an attacking dog if it comes onto your property but not if it is anywhere else.
If you know which dog and where it lives, the police might be able to handle the situation for you before you next go running.

I cannot honestly say if it is legal, but if the dog has (or is) attacking you then you have the legal right to defend yourself-if that means the dog dies while defending yourself, then too bad for the dog!! The idea is to stop the attack without death, but in some cases death is the only way to stop the attack. You do what needs to be done to defend yourself (you of all people should know and understand this thought!)

to be on the safe side report the dog to animal control after all it did bite you .if there is an owner they should be held accountable, animal control can find out who it belongs to.and perhaps keep it from attacking someone incapable of defending themselves.Oh by the way how were you planning on cooking the dog after you killed it? this is cooking and recipes you know?

If your life is in danger - absolutely! It would be sad to have to kill a dog, but you must protect yourself. You needed to call animal control or the police so the dog could be caught becuase it may attack someone else. They may be able to find the owner to make them accountable.

No - it is not legal to kill a dog, leash or no leash, collar or not.
Call Animal control, they will try and catch the dog, and determine if it's a pet who escaped, or if it's really a 'throw away'.
If you kill, or injure the dog, and it is a pet, you are responsible for the vet bills that are a result of the injury.

You should ask that question somewhere else, you are here on the cooking section. Unless you want to cook the dog after you killed it.
I am an animal protector, so I don't like pets getting killed. Find another way.

I understand the deer is on your resources yet they nonetheless belong to the state. you opt on to regulate your canines. maximum states enable different hunters or everybody that sees this happening to shoot the canines chasing deer. they could be on your land for the most area yet 22 acres isn't that a lot land. If i grow to be one among your friends i'd not imagine two times. you ought to do the right element and record it. Im particular you gained't regardless of the reality that yet a minimum of hit upon a thanks to regulate your canines. submit a 4 or 5 foot tall electric powered fence. that is a cheap thanks to save your canines in a chosen area. you ought to cordon off 2 or better acres for them. again this gained't value that a lot.
