I have an 11 month year old Lab, my niece and nephew love her there 4yrs old and 2 yrs old, but she plays too rough with them she plays with them as if they were her littermate. Sometimes i have to confine her away from them. I dont want to, I want her to be allowed to play with them. I tried teaching her to be more nice, but it just doesnt seem to work what should i do?

She's playing rough with them because she DOES think they're her littermates. They are small and she can establish dominance over them. You need to correct this behavior as soon as possible so that she doesn't become too aggressive towards children. It will take a lot of patience and time to correct her of this behavior, but it is possible. Whenever she starts to play too rough, stop the playing immediately and firmly tell her no. Make her lay down (and even roll over onto her back) by the kids while they are standing. This shows her that you and the kids are dominant. Good Luck.

Remember this is a baby too, and an animal. Limit the playing to when you have time for full attention. I am sure that your puppy would not hurt them purposely however, your puppy does not see them for being a person. The 4 and 2 yr old are toys at their size and therefore can be played with as easily or roughly as he feels that day. They will not command respect until they are larger and unable to take defensive steps to protect themselves. The rule is never leave any animal alone with small children no matter how well behaved they may be. Recent reports of another animal (dog) rott killed an 18 month old and injured her brother. I hope this helps. Good luck.

If it's 11 months old, 'years' is not a necessary designation.

What you need to do is just wait until your children are bigger or the lab is older. Puppies, much like small children, do not understand that playing too rough hurts. They're exuberant, they love their people, people love them, OMG gonna play with the people people people jump jump OMG it is teh awesome!!!! And you can't dumb that down unless you abuse your animal. You just have to be patient and keep an eye on them. When your kids and your dog are bigger, the kids will be more able to take the jumping, and the dog will be less enthusiastic about the play. Just keep telling the dog 'no! Chill!' and pulling it away from the kids when it gets too rough. They've just gotta learn.

Be the parent (pet parent), discipline her when she gets too rough. Have practice sessions where the dog lays on the ground and the kids lay on top of her (gently of course). this teachers her that humans are the dominant pack members, even if the humans happen to be children. Help the children discipline her, they can yell out commands like "no' and "off", if the dog does not listen, then you step in and make her listen. Just all part of being a doggy daddy and mommy. She is the dog and you are the alpha, maintain that type of a relationship.

Bombastic behavior is young Labs is not uncommon; they're very physical, affectionate dogs. But your dog will need to get some obedience and socialization training to keep it from bulldozing your little ones.

We suggest taking the dog to a socialization class where its given exposure to lots of different people and dogs under the guidance of a trainer who can help you to better control your dog in these situations. Classes are usually available through larger pet stores and your local animal control office.

Labs are known for being excessivley hyper. They have a great temperment when it comes to children but as I said, they are hyper and taking into account that she is a puppy it is going to be even worse. You have 2 options. One, you could get her some training, puppy classes or two, you could get some books and train her yourself. That is your best bet for a long term effect.

An alpha roll is the wrong thing to do in this case. Alpha rolling your dog will teach your dog that you are not to be trusted.

the best bet is teaching her yourself I don't trust someone else to train my dogs . some of the obedient schools mistreat their animals.
