2 days ago i wormed my 4 week old puppy as advised by the vet , she passed worms in her faeces and was well.........today it seemed she was going to vomit (and crying as if in pain) then all of a sudden muccus came from her nose, in the muccus was a worm around an inch long,,,she then settled down, slept and was herself again......this evening she seems lathargic and has vomited a little (milk from her feed- hand rearing) is this normal after worming???

Normally I would say not to worry but, this is a young pup that is already at risk due to hand feeding. Nothing a person can do for a pup is as good as natural feeding from the mother. Call the vet and tell them what you told us. I have pups that vomit after worming but not lethargic.

Don't give any more dewormer. If they are vomiting it back up it's not worth giving right now. I think your puppies may have an intestinal virus. Since they are having such bad diarrhea and vomiting it is important that you hold off feeding them for 24 hours, then when they do eat, make it small and mild.. rice, boiled chicken, very mild foods. But, since they are puppies they are at extreme risk for dehydration. You need to get those puppies to the vet right away. Have them teach you how to adminster fluids with a shot that you can do at home. Hopefully they will make it past this illness. I lost most of a litter a year ago from a virus. It sucks. Just try to keep them hydrated and warm for now and get them in to the vet.

It's unusual for any vet to worm a puppy that young! Most of the time, pups aren't wormed until they're about 6 weeks old and get their first puppy vaccination. The reason why younger pups aren't usually wormed is because their tiny systems can't take the poison used in the worming agent.
If her lethargy continues for more than a day, we suggest taking the sick pup to another vet as quickly as possible.

pete never heard of this before and I used to breed dogs. Was it a round worm or a tape worm ? Do you know the difference between them ? Round worms are very long and thin and round but tape worms are segmented. and are the most dangerous to a dog. It doesnt seem normal to me babe I would be tempted to either take her back to the vets or try worming her again. I feel sorry for her she is going through so much at only 4 weeks. Why is she not with her mum. I used to breed dogs and never come across a puppy so young being hand reared, but did once have one in my bra after I started it breathing with the kiss of life, lolol. I would seek the vets advice babe. good luck.

why at 4 weeks is the pup away from her mom..?
the pup may vomit because she is so young and the strength of wormer is to much
how soon after taking wormer did she vomit had it got into her system
is the pup with rest of litter if so worm all and any other pets you have
are you there when the pup as been going to the toilet as pups will eat there own mess and re infestation will take place
BEST ADVICE.. go straight back to your vets if not happy try another vet... meanwhile make sure things have been sterilised ....
you could always phone another vet for advice

It depends upon the wormer you gave your dog. Some anthelmintics cause vomiting as part of the pharmacological action. If the dog is OK don't worry about it, espcially if the worms were discharged. The problem is if the puppy vomits too quickly after dosing because most companies advise NOT to retreat.

Yes, puppies can both vomit and pass whole worms after a deworming event. But it should not last. In a pup that young you need to be concerned about hypoglycemia, dehydration and perhaps intestinal blockage from mass kill off of the parasites. Please call your vet and get their advice.
It is not unusual to start to deworm puppies at 3 weeks of age due to transplacental infection from the mother.

That doesn't sound normal at all for a puppy. Did she have a lot of worms in her stool? If so, her tummy may be upset from all the worms that died from the deworming and it may take her a couple of days to pass all the worms. Make sure you deworm her again in a few weeks to kill off any remaining worms.

i have never non a pup to be sick after worming, i think you would be safer to ring your vets to be on the safe side, your puppy is very poorly, especially if he already has worms at a small age, it is safer to treat mum and any other pups. Hope everything turns out well for you and pup.

This happened to my lab. Your pup probably needs another round of worming. Mine still had some after her first round. Ask you vet why he did anything before 6 weeks.
