Are they ever eventually found and if so, how?

Eventually - they will be caught.

The military is not going to invest a whole lot of resources in getting these losers back. generally, they will wait for him to get pulled over for a traffic ticket then thrown in jail when the cops discover the desertion warrant.

This typically occurs after the deserter has settled down, gotten a family and a career. At this point his kids and wife will have to explain to their friends why daddy is in jail.

His employer will not hold his job for him either.

And at this point he will be wondering why nobody feels sorry for him . . .

They are listed as UA, on the 31st day they are listed as a deserter and if they have a spouse all the benefits/pay/housing etc stop. If they live in base housing the Marines will ship her to her home of record, then she is on her own.

Also to add to what Lone said...their Social Security Number will be put in the data bank with all other people with warrants, because they will swear out a Federal Warrant on them, and if he is pulled over or he applies for a job, the Federal Marshals will come and get him and take him to the Marines for prosecution...remember during war time it is not AWOL (Away With Out Leave) but Desertion, which can carry the penalty of death...and there is no Statue of Limitation on Desertion...

They look for them, the spouse has 30 days worth of benefits before they are yanked and left with only a plane ticket home and their stuff dropped off at their last known home of record. Not a good move to try.

They hunt you til they find you.
I spent 6mos as a cross country chaser, picking up deserters. You desert, you have a Federal Warrant on you and everybody down to local cops can arrest you.
Their spouses lose all pay and benefits.

As in the other branches of service, if you go AWOL they will look for and find you. You will be retuned to camp, charged with AWOL, court martialed and given your sentence. Now get back to base.
