Because it was not a common way for Romans to kill their prisoners in those days.

Cruification was a long, lingering death that was intended to strike fear by example into the hearts of anyone who would think of defying Roman authority.

Uh they uh were using them to pound the spikes in his hands (well, actually wrists) and his feet so they could give him a common criminal's death by hanging him on a cross. Also, the Romans just carried out the sentence that the Jews demanded!
