Or I guess any other holiday for that matter? I have an 18 month old and a 2 year old and I don't really know how to go about explaining these things to them. For Valentines Day we have made cookies and watched Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown. I don't really know how/what to say to them to get them to somewhat start understanding the concepts of holidays. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks guys!

hey i have a 2 year old daughter rather than explaining to her what valentines day is my hubby and i actually deck up our house 14 days before valentine with balloons streamers and things like that on the 14th we all buy a cake and celebrate so she doesn't actually understand what is the meaning but she understands that this is one more way of loving ecah other.valentines day for us doesn't mean its for me and my hubby we celebrate as we would celebrate any festival, we deck up our house make cookies but the most important thing is we do it together as in my daughter would hand me the balloons while my hubby would cut the cellotape we would sing some love songs dance together and make it a fun activity, my daughter now very well understands that something special is nearing , if you take your daughter to supermarkets show her how popel have decked up the market for the festival of love as it has no boundaries, buy her a valentine balloon, and just keep showing her and telling her things they very soon catch up on these things she was barely 20 mmonths when she knew the meaning of christmas and all the stories from rudolph, santa to jesus and what is christams celebrated for, and we teach her everything from our festival like Diwali which is an Indian festival to what hannukah is...hope it helps.

Simple is best for that age. For Valentines just say it is a special day to tell someone how much you love them. They can make cards for grandparents, mom and dad, siblings, even family pets! At that age they just need a few basics. Tell them the date is how you know when and it only happens once a year. Use it for other holidays too.

Green on St Patty's Day is for luck (they won't get the real reason till they are school aged at least). Easter (for our family) is to welcome Spring time and be with our family-the real meaning of Easter to me is too much for a small child so we will discuss that when he is older and it isn't as scarey, I don't want to tell him about death just yet. Little kids take things to heart. We focus on Halloween as candy treats for kids who dress up-he went as Piglet. We read Halloween stories that don't go into any thing scarey. Christmas is a birthday party and time for being with your family. Their are books for children for every holiday now and you can get board books that give a simple message that shows the things you do to celebrate the holiday. I try to put those out a few weeks before the holiday so we can enjoy them in advance. I hope that your family has a great V-Day!

You should say they are special days that you can be with someone special [holidays].

[valentines day] is a day that was made up for couples to be happy together and go out to dinner...

lol wait untill they are a little older to understand the concept... untill then, make up something.

You dont need to worry about trying to explain such things to such young children, in a world of such a young person its just all fun so just concentrate on making whatever occassion you are wanting them to participate in as much fun and happy as possible, this will stick in their minds and as they get older they will catch on to the celebration thing just naturally. Just enjoy.
