Probably a month ago I noticed he had a little sore on the side of his 'man part' and that it had scabbed over. Since then it gets better then gets worse over and over again. The sore isnt that bad but it seems to get worse. I dont want freaking huge vet bills. Is there something I can put on it or over it...its kinda in an awkward place so I dont know what to do. I just really want to get rid of the gross scab so he can be normal again. Any ideas?

Since it is scabbing, it may be itching....just like our skin itches if we have a wound that it scabbing over. He may be scratching or biting at it if it does itch. If he is biting at it, there is a ointment called Yuk that is sold at some vet clinics. It has a terrible taste so the dog won't lick or bite the area. If he is scratching at it, I would try an anti-itch ointment...something like hydrocortizone or neosporin to stop the itch. It is in an awkward place, so there is really no easy way to bandage it so he can't get to it. I would try the anti-itch ointments and see how he does.

Put Neosporin on the area, and then have him wear an Elizabethan collar (cone, lampshape collar) to keep him from licking off the ointment. Leave the collar on him until the area is completely healed.

If it doesn't heal within 14 days, take the dog to a vet. A recurring scab could be the early stages of skin cancer.

Sounds like he keeps messing with it. As long as puss never forms, I wouldn't worry about taking him to the vet. What I would do is buy cone to go over his head so he can't mess with it. If it continues to get worse, then take him to the vet because it could be serious.

Also, when my dog was a puppy, he used to bury things to the point where his nose would be raw, so I would put Neosporin on it and it helped it heal faster, so maybe that's worth a try?

Good luck!

My golden retriever has a hot spot on his right front paw. The biggest problem is that he continues to lick it all the time (I don't know if that is the case or if you don't see him do it). Our friend is a vet and he told us to put hemmoroid cream on it...it keeps him from licking it (the smell possibly) and it also keeps it moist. I was always told to put vasoline on scabs because you want to keep them moist. The vasoline should eventually help it "slide" off...

See a vet, that is the best thing to do. This sounds like it may be the result of him licking till it develops a sore and will continue.

It would be best to have that vet checked, but if not, then try some neosporin or a product that contains 5% benzoyl peroxide (check the human acne products for this).
