Ignore what Munky said. Do not give your cat dog food. they aren't designed to sustain on dog food. and giving your cat minty treats or food will not cure the problem either.

Bad breath in cats can be due to periodontal disease or possibly some kind of organ disease. they should not have bad breath, and i would recommend taking him to your vet to get a check up.

Keep his vaccines updated, get him yearly dental cleanings and have yearly wellness bloodwork run on him. especially since he is considered a senior pet. this is the age where the onset of disease begins. bloodwork will catch things early. most diseases are too far gone to help once the cat starts showing any symptoms.

I just started using a product recommended by our pet store. It is called PlaqueOff Animal. It is supposed to help bad breath, tarter and plaque. It contains a special seaweed that is supposed to be good for cleaning teeth. You use a small scoop (provided) and place it on your pet's food every day. Over time, it is supposed to help. The owner of the store used it for her dogs and said in about 4 weeks she noticed a difference. I haven't used it that long, so can't comment on how well it works myself. We just started putting in our cat's food recently.

It comes in a small bottle, not cheap - about $23, but is supposed to last for one year. Outside of that, the only other thing I could say is to have the vet do a dental cleaning on your cat's teeth.

Look inside his mouth if you can. Check his teeth... any tartar or plaque build-up? If so, that is the cause of the bad breath. Have his teeth cleaned by the vet and then do regular maintenance at homw by brushing your cat's teeth with appropriate kitty toothpaste and brush every other day or so. My cat will have bad breath if I forget to brush his teeth 2 days in a row. So I brush them everyday. Its a chore but its good oral hygeine for the cat.

Hi there...generally, when a cat exhibits bad breath it could be a result of either periodontal, kidney, respiratory or liver disease to diabetes, skin disease (involving tissue around the lips) or oral trauma, such as electric cord injury. However, by far, the most common problem associated with bad breath is periodontal disease. All which will require a veterinarian's evaluation to treat respectively.

If you can afford it, (some places are cheaper than others) take him in for a dental cleaning at your vet. This will help improve his bad breath as well as improve overall dental hygene. Also start him on a good quality dental diet. My cats love Science diet Oral Health, this should help slow tartar build-up and keep his breath from being overly stinky .

Cats, just like people, need to have their teeth professionally cleaned periodically. The smell is likely from the beginnings of periodontal disease. Take to your vet to be examined and he will likely want to schedule a cleaning and perhaps other work if he has developed other dental problems.

There are suppliments you can give him that will help with his breath. And you probably should take him to get his teeth cleaned, and incidentally to make sure that the bad breath doesn't point at a worse problem.

Good luck!

I think if it's breath is really bad and your willing to try anything you could try using dog tooth paste or let it eat dog food that has mint in it. That is all I know right now.
