Would you prefer to live on the bottom, middle or top of an apartment complex? I live on bottom right now and the people above us have a small child and is contantly running all hours of the day and night. My boyfriend spoke to them and they said they would keep it down but didn't. So my b/f talked to the landlord and basically he said he couldn't do anything about that but if it was loud music or something he could. So.....he suggested moving to the very top apt. I DO NOT want to move for two reasons: one we JUST moved in last week and just now have everything already unpacked and pics hung up and two we will have to move everything up 3 flights of stairs. Plus I wonder what if there are people on either sides of us who are loud. I don't want to but my b/f does...what do I do????? Please help ASAP.

being a veteran apt dweller i can tell you the top floor is the place to be. you may have some noise from someone beside you, but that could happen on any floor.
i have found living on the top floor to be the quietest place as other people on the top floor are generally there for the same reason as you...........they are looking for peace and quiet as well.....so the odds are better that you will have quiet neighbors!
besides most noise travels up and down, not side to side, and yes there are some exceptions but after decades of apt dwelling i find it unusual!
take your landlords offer, make your beau happy and pack up and move up! otherwise the youngster above you will make you crazy............you never really get used to it...........at least i didn't. and look at it this way........three flights of stairs every day saves you the cost of going to the gym!!!!
take the apartment!!!!

Congrats to you for already being unpacked after only moving a week ago! I moved 14 months ago, and I'm still unpacking boxes.

Look at it this way, if you want to not be able to hear people above you, go for it. But beware, the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence, and just because there's no noise above you, doesn't mean there won't be noise elsewhere. And even though the tennants were told to be quiet, take it from someone who has small children...you just can't keep them quiet.

I, personally, would prefer to live on the top. On the top, you wouldn't have children running above you, and if the neighbours were noisy, it would likely be able to be stopped by your landlord. If it was from children, you probably wouldn't hear them in the first place.

Sit down and discuss the pros and cons with your boyfriend, and make it clear that you don't want the work of moving again so soon. If he's insistent on moving, maybe he's got some buddies that will do the heavy work for you.

Good luck!

well, I live on the top floor, the 3rd...and although the prospect of moving everything up 3 flights of stairs was daunting, I am so glad I did!!! You're probably going to hear some amount of noise since it is an apartment building, but being on the top means absolutely nothing above you, all you'll hear is airplanes....

It sucks to move up, but on the bright side it's not like you have to really re-pack everything, you're just moving in the same building correct? That makes it easier, no need for wrapping or taping boxes, just make small trips with the laundry basket and set things up as you go.....

trust me, if you stay on the bottom, you will be driven nuts by the ones above you....even the ppl below me have a small child and I can sometime hear him runnin about, but I'm thankful it's not stomping overhead....oh, and ppl beside you making noise is still wayyyyyyyyyyy better than pounding on the ceiling, don't ya think?

Personally, I love the TOP floor. Yes it is a hassle lugging groceries and when your tired but think of the wonderfull plusses it has. No one above you. Your on top of the world. Keep your heat on low and you still have a warm apartment. Which in turns mean low bills and more money in your pocket.
So think of what your needs are and weight out the good verses bad and go for the top.
To realistically think you can controll when a toddler walkes or crawles and the noice they inted or not intend to make is unrealistic thinking. Have a bit of compassion when it comes to children for one day you may need such. Every one does not parent the same so, take that in consideration. We all tend to have the answers when never have experienced this personally. But, rest assured if you have children... hind sight will be 20/20. Will you be able to say you deserve understanding due to your level of compassion released or sown in to the universe. What you reap you so. As for just moving in... I understand that, but think of this... statistics show that it in fact takes 3 or more months to settle in a new house... so, how settled are you.
You just might like it better to be on top, less frustraited with your new neighbors, and may find a friend in the process.

Unfortunately, the risk of living in apartments is noisy neighbors, you can't totally avoid them. As far as cost, the middle is the best because it is insulated by the apartment above and the heat from the apartment below rises, so you almost never need to turn your heat on. In the summer the top apartment can get hotter than others because of the sun shining on the roof. Also if you live in the middle or on top, you may get neighbors below you who think you are to noisy. If you want to live somewhere that you don't have to deal with noise above, beside or below you, you have to rent or buy a house.

Yes it is a trade off.

Living on the top floor means you will not be disturbed by running, jumping, wrestling, dancing in the unit above. But you will have to also refrain from excessively doing to same.

Yes you will have to schlep all your belongings up two flights of stairs. But being on the top floor is safer from break-ins and peeping toms.

Perhaps the best unit to live in is a middle floor. Being surrounded by two heated/cooled units may mean that you are better insulated doing extreme cold/heat. Meaning lower electric/gas bills.

Unfortunately, no matter where you live, you run the risk of noisy neighbors - whether on top, bottom or sides. You can reduce the chances of having noisy neighbors if you pick a top floor apartment on the extreme end of the hallway. Noise from downstairs is not nearly as bad and disturbing as noise from upstairs. Upstairs has less insects too.
Go for the top floor.

Well maybe the best thing to do is to live on the top floor. Cause i know it will drive you insane listening to that kid or anyone else who decides to live above you. I know that it will suck to move agian, but trust me it will definately be worth it. You will have a lot of work to do when you move but it will be the best decision you have ever made once evertything is settled. Pl us it will give you a little bit more exercise everyday. lol. j/k. Well i hope everything works out for you!!!

i know it's probably super annoying right now, but after a little while, you sort of get used to it. i lived in the downstairs apartment for a long time and had some giant people who lived above me that stomped around all night/morning long. at first it really bothered me, but after a couple weeks i didn't even notice it anymore.

hi,
there is no real answer to that question. living on the bottom you get noise, living on the top you will get noise from each side of you and living in the middle you get it from all sides and from the top floor and the bottom floor
