The only thing worshiped is knowledge. Knowledge of self and existence. The teachings of the Buddha, the first one to become enlightened, are the 'sacred' texts of Buddhism, if you could call them that. Too many traditions to name.

If you look at the time line of these 2 religions you may discover something interesting: Buddhism started in Northern India around 500 BC. It was based on the teachings of Guatama Siddharta (or Buddha) who after observing the hostility and suffering around him, searched within himself for answers and enlightenment. He achieved the state of "bodhi", enlightenment. A buddha is simply one who has attained this state. There have been many "buddhas". He then travelled widely with many followers spreading his teachings. This continued after his death and was responsible for civilizing most of Asia and China (which had been pretty bababaric before this time.) 500 years later christianity started in the Middle East. There is much similarity between the teachings of Jesus and those from the East originated by Guatama Buddha. I have personally often wondered, since there are no records in the New Testament, what Jesus actually did before he arrived on the scene at the age of 30 (approx). Is it possible that he travelled East , achieved "bodhi" and brought these teachings back to the people of the Middle East ? I myself see very little difference between the basic lessons and principles taught by Jesus and those of Guatama Buddha.

Nothing is worshipped-it has no theology or deities. It's first and foremost a system of practical philosophy and it actively avoids any involvement in politics. It uses icons as an aid to focusing the mind for meditation but they aren't the subject of devotion as icons in Christianity are.
