go to a chiropractor, or have someone gently massage it. Try to bend your neck gently in the direction that it hurts, but avoid rotating or twisting your neck, in case something is really wrong in there.

This problem arises when there is underlying situation where there is muscle tightening on one side of the neck. Suggesting thre is deviation in the postural aspect. If that shorter muscle is stretched, it often reacts just as you have seen take place. If he doesn't want to go to a chiropractor and have it taken care of, have him find the side with the most tightness and start stretching on that muscle until it releases..Otherwise it is going to remain in spasm. Followed by an inflamatory process, which will prolong the situation.

Stretch. Stay hydrated. I bet you didn't drink any water. It's best in the morning to start off the day with water that is slightly warm. This will lubricate your throat tissues. That has nothing to do with your neck pain, but it just helps. Try it and see.
Your neck problem can just be solved by sleeping correctly. To relieve pain, find a good massage therapist.

There is no quick fix although I got a knot out of my boyfriends leg the first time I gave him a massage. The ice, heat, chiropractor, massages and stretcing will help, muscle relaxers too. But it will take some time, maybe about a week if it is really bad.

Yes to the massage and preferably the chiropractor too (I prefer ones who use activators instead of bone crunchers).
Also inform yourself about muscles, pain and referred pain by reading a book called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches you how to help yourself.
