Because they are defending themselves,and if they hiss at you that means back away, or you might get bitten or scratched.

Cats hiss and growl to try to scare off whatever is scaring them. They may also hiss when they are angry. It's kitty-speak for "BACK OFF!"

It's just part of their "being". I really don't know how to explain it, it just human nature so to speak for them, or should we say animal nature? It's probably just like when we get scared all of a sudden we scream.

They are warning you to back away. They don't like what they see, and are afraid of it...so watch out!

I guess because they cant yell or scream, its one way of them comunicating and to warn others "I am scared, and I just might hurt you".....
