a while ago my wisom tooth was agony for about 4 months - no pain killer would help (i take 8 co-dydramol a day for an unrealted problem and it still hurt).
i managed to see a dentist and she said my upper left wisdom tooth is rotting and would have to be taken out, i was supposed to go back for an x-ray then a week later for the extraction but couldnt afford it so i have left it for 5 months now, the pain has stopped but there is hardly any tooth left and what is there is crumbling away when i eat.
should i be worried that the pain has stopped? what will happen if i just leave it?

You need help now!!!
I'm a nurse and took care of a man who left his tooth untreated. He wound up with an absess that went to the brain and caused brain damage.
Call around for help and get it IMMEDIATELY!!!

Been there not too long ago! I have no insurance and two kids that always come first so my needs always get pushed back! I had to let a tooth go, and exactly as you describe it crumbled away and quit hurting. The oral surgeon who removed it and a few others said he had never seen anyone stand the pain long enough to allow it to reach the point it did. All but one side of a root was gone & without any pain...I don't know that anything would have happened, I had a tooth abscess well before that stage. The tooth I let go so long just basically fell out.

I'm happy for you that the pain has stopped. Still, I have a tooth that hurt like crazy also, and I too could not afford the recommended dental treatment. The tooth began to crumble and turn dark. The pain disappeared, but I still have fragments of leftover tooth in my gums, as the top of the tooth pretty much broke off but left the root intact. My son's dentist told him that decay in one tooth can reach out to the other teeth nearby. That is not good. Also, as one person pointed out, an abscess can be very painful. Not only can it be painful, but you could develop an infection. Infections in the mouth can actually travel to your heart and could cause you to have heart problems. My sister had that happen to her and she now has to be on heart medication for the rest of her life. My kids have dental insurance, but I don't currently. I will have to postpone my own dental work. If you can at all try to get your situation resolved with your dentist, then you should try, because it will only get worse - one way or another. Many dentists offer payment plans, on approved credit. If your credit is decent, you could apply for that. If you think your credit is horrible, you could still at least apply for credit approval and see if you get approved. You never know until you try, and your mouth will thank you later for it. Good luck!

Ew, definitely go and get that checked out. There is a high probability of an infection; it can spread throughout your mouth. The pain probably stopped because the nerve in your tooth has finally deteriorated away. Go to the dentist!! Oh, and the hole left by your tooth can cause a dry socket (a pocket of air inside your gum). Very, very painful!

it sounds like your tooth has weakened and so is crumbling on its own, when it has all crumbled away you should see your dentist to check if it has all gone. as for the pain my wisdom tooth hurts when its growing and i know its agony, but it only hurts because it is irritating the surrounding tissue. with the pain going away it probably stopped pushing on the nerves or it now fits better in the space it once occupied with it being smaller because of it crumbling away.
i would still get it checked just so you know it isnt infecting your gums or jawbone, an abscess in your bone hurts way more than what you have suffered already!!

Yes you should really worry!!!! When the pain goes, you have no idea what is happening. I had major tooth problems a couple of years ago and ignored it and spent the best part of £1000 trying to sort it out privately........ and the agony was like nothing I had ever experienced. If it gets infected - and you need antibiotics, it take a couple of days for them to get started..... I had all my wisdom teeth out in the end and have had no problems since.....

The pain has stopped because the root has died I imagine..There is and isn't reason to worry now..You don't want to get infection in it or have it rotting your gums or something and I am sure it doesn't smell very good on your breath..I have seem many, many people walking around with teeth rotting out of their mouth so I don't guess it will kill you oar anything..But in my opinion it is kind of gross...Pulling a tooth does not cost that much..ss

I would get to the dentist. My wisdom teeth did the same thing and it almost set up severe infection. If infection sets up you could have severe problems, especially if the infection gets in your blood stream. most dentists have payment plans or sliding scale fees, just ask.

Get in to the dentist. Something like that can kill you - literally. If it becomes infected it is possible for it to get to your brain and kill you. Call about payments, explain the situation....it's serious.
