Lethal is lethal, the most effective varies with combat conditions, mission requirements and personal preference.

Listen, the fifty cal. isn't an assault rifle, the Beretta is a standard issue pistol for the US armed forces and police, and it is produced by H&K. The MP-5 in all its variants is perfectly suited for CQB, but its 9mm bullet is ineffective for standard combat conditions. The M-4 is a short M-16 and is said to replace the M-16A2 as a standard issue of our armed forces, the 45mm M119A1 is rumored to be coming back. The AK-47 is a cheap and extremely reliable as it has few moving parts to jam on you but it’s extremely sloppy, and very inaccurate. The 5.56mm round that goes in the M-16 doesn't actually tumble nor was it designed to do so, however it is extremely unstable because it has a very high velocity and a VERY high rate of twist for such a light, small round. It will get thrown off its center by a blade of grass it will stay on target though. The M-16 in any rate is highly accurate with an MOA of only about 1, but since the round is so unstable at close range it causes odd impact and exit patterns at close range. I've been present for ballistics tests with the 5.56mm round and its penetration at 200 yards was greater than it was at 50 yards, due to the instability of the round at high speeds once it slowed and an equilibrium (if you will) was achieved its penetration ability was greatly increased.
All this is just allot of mumbo-jumbo to the average person so read some of these answers and (I'm not sure who wrote it) the guy that said it depends mostly on the individual holding the weapon---that guy is 100,000% percent right.

the HK G3..its has the most power ..308 win..most assualt rifles today are using either the russian 7.62x39mm..or 5.56x45mm ...but the G3 or HK 91 are still using the 7.62x51mm Nato..and can fire on full auto and are the favoret of Navy Seals..any assualt rifle can kill but in built up areas like house to house or thick jungles you want something with more knock down power almost every general purpose machine guns are in 7.62x51mm the term Assault rifle was termed by A,Hitler after seeing the MP44 the 50 cal is not an assault rifle but a machine gun and the AR-15/M-16 comes in many calibers..the Oldman doesnt have a clue..HK's G3 is used by half of Africa..and South American Armies..and the AK47 has killed more people than any other rifle in the world..

There is no such thing as an "assault rifle." This term was invented by the news media and anti-gun zealots to enable them to use one term to describe military-style weapons, thus fooling the general public into thinking that ANY weapon so described was a military weapon and should not be in civilian hands. The US military does not now, nor has it ever, classified ANY weapon in its inventory as an "assault" weapon or "assault" rifle.

Any firearm is only as good as the person pulling the trigger. If you cannot hit your target, it does not matter how much killing potential the gun has.

Now, please define what you mean by assault rifle. Most anything can be used to commit an assault - ranging from screwdrivers to baseball bats to single shot rifles to semi-automatic rifles to fully automatic rifles.

One of the best and most reliable is the AK-47. The M-16 series can't hold a candle to it in the way of lethality.

There is no "most"... there are quite a few but it seems the rest of the world is heading towards 30 caliber... besides it's not the rifle that kills ya dude!

the one that is in the hands of a soldier who knows how to effectively employ it. Caliber, make, model, do not matter if the person does not know how operate the weapon system, much less zero the weapon and hit a target.

The AK-47.

Because it's the most widely produced and used weapon in the world.
