There are color rinses available at hair supply stores, you put it in, style your hair and then it rinses out when you wash it. There's always that chance that it won't wash all of the way out, but that's usually only a problem with blondes. I'd give it a try, it's not very expensive.

There are some natural herbs that you can use to enrich hair color. This recipe below is for a natural hair coloring.
YOU WILL NEED
1. 1/4 cup dried hibiscus flowers or loose hibiscus tea
2. 1/2 cup pure henna powder (Note: Follow instructions on the box: henna is stronger than other herbs and the effects are self-permanent. Try a sample test first, and start out slow)
3. 2 Cups water
4. Plastic squeeze bottle (optional)
WHAT TO DO
1. Place the hibiscus flowers (herbs) in a pot with the 2 cups of water. (Don't use an aluminum pot; it reacts negatively to the herbs)
2. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes (until the mixture is reduced by about half)
3. Let cool 10-15 minutes. Then strain out the herbs and pour the mixture into a plastic squeeze bottle. (If you're not using one, strain it into a bowl)
4. Shampoo your hair as usual, then use the squeeze bottle (or your hands) to apple the herb mixture to your hair from roots to tips. Rinse well with cool water to seal the hair shaft and help perserve the color.
This is a REAL recipe! I got it from a special book, which I wrote down in my sources! If you don't believe me, you can buy it for yourself.

if you want to go lighter you can always put some lemon juice and go into the sun for a bit or even just run the blowdryer through it... unless of course your hair is really dark than you will end up with orange hair... peroxide works the same way. They sale temporary hair gunk that washes out it's like a paste or a gel and you just put it on before styling and then you wash it out.. I've seen it at Sally's, Claires, Hot Topic, and the Icing some makeup stores sell it too

Most general grocery stores/department stores carry a color wash or temporary color (make sure you check that the box says temporary) that washes out in anywhere from a few days to a few weeks (most state on the box). I've had friends that have used Loreal Color Pulse and they like it. Plus it washes out in 8 to 10 shampoos.
With having darker hair you might want to avoid "lighteners" or "spray in highlighters" like Sun-In. I used it in the 8th grade (my hair is naturally dark brown) and it turned it orange instead of blonde because of the original color being dark.

Use red or auburn henna. Henna is hair conditioner that can add color. It gradually washes out and fades. It's very good for your hair.
