It depends on where you live.
Most cities and counties in the United States require that your dog wear his current license at all times when off your own property. In most states, licenses have to be renewed annually (once a year) and you need to have proof of your rabies shot in order to do so.

I believe each state is different, but I know you must have it renewed yearly. If you have your pet tattooed, then you never have to buy a license. Check with your local vets they would most likely know the policies for the area you live.

License or rabies certification?
Localities govern the license. Rabies vacs are good for 3 years after the dog is one year old.

Most licenses are issued for one year. It should have this info on the license, if you have one.

You have to get new dog license every year. I know here in Ohio they are due by Jan. 31st. They are $10.75 each.

This varies from state to state and even within cities. You should call your local humane society and ask them. Any answers you get on here will be worthless unless the person lives next door to you.
