I own a shop, and used to own a Neon. I couldn't kill that car. It ran on an on like the bunny rabbit in the battery commerical. Mine threw a timing belt once, and warpped some valves. It took a lot of work to get it running again. When these engines do this, they often will damage a pistion beyond repair. A quick compression test on the missing cylinder will tell a lot about the engine condition. One thing to look at is; how many miles is on the vehicle? What caused the miss to begin with? If the miss is due to the spark plug fouling out with oil, then you just might be better off putting another engine in it. These engines can get very expensive to tear down and fix. Anything can be fixed as far as that goes, but one must weigh the difference between fixing something, and replacing something. If it is going to mean tearing the engine down, and replacing a cracked pistion, then I would lean toward the replacment of the engine. The car is now 7 years old, and depending on the miles on it, it may be less expensive to put a good low mileage used engine in it, rather than fixing the one you have. I'm in no way saying the mechanic is right, or am I saying he is wrong. You need to have a talk with him, and have him explain why he thinks the engine is shot. Once you have his conclussion in your mind totally, go to another mechanic, and have them do a few tests on the engine to determine the condition of the engine. You don't have to take an engine apart to determine the condition of it. Mechanics have all kinds of tools to run test with, that can in fact tell you pretty quick just what condition an engine is in. Many factors apply too, such as one that is throwing all the oil out of it, and has very low compression on one cylinder. This is a sure indication of a cracked pistion, blown head gasket, or cracked block. Like I said, "anything" can be fixed.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!!!

NO!!! You do not have to replace the entire engine, you can get the defective part rebuilt or replaced for less than getting a new engine. The first guy was just trying to make major $$ from you!! I also have a Neon (1998), and almost everything can be replaced or rebuilt for less than new. The diagnostic would not tell him the cylinder is bad, it would tell him there is a problem in #(whichever) cylinder. To determine the cylinder is bad requires that the engine be partially torn down (ie: heads taken off and cylinder pulled out). I suggest that you go with mechanic #2. Good luck!

well that depends, if its actually the piston thats bad, then yes it can be changed out without replacing the engine. if its the engine block thats cracked, the whole thing would have to be replaced.
