I'd rather not leave the country without a passport, but the below will tell you where you don't need one to travel:

The passport requirement does NOT apply to U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from a U.S. territory. U.S. citizens returning directly from a U.S. territory are not considered to have left the United States and do not need to present a passport. U.S. territories include the following: Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

As of right now, you can still travel from the US to Mexico and Canada (assuming you are a legal US citizen) without a passport, as long as you enter and leave by boat or by car. This will change in Jan. 2008 when you will need one even when travelling by boat or car.

It is still recommended to have a passport, as it makes the crossing faster and easier. If you don't have one, you still need your birth certificate and driver's license.

I don't think any right now. Mexico and Canada now require passports. If there were any places in the world that would accept you without a passport, you'd have a hard time getting back into the states. Getting one isn't hard, and it'll last you for 10 years.
