Hey,

I've been playing guitar for a while now and i've decided to start learning to play some smooth jazz.

Can anyone reccomend;

- Some good smooth jazz to listen to?

- Some good scales to learn / plces to learn them.

Thanks in advance,

Bebop.

There are some good DVDs you can buy by jazz guitarists. You might learn a lot from them. There are some good jazz online radio stations on the internet.

Check out Larry Carlton, Earl Klugh, Lee Ritenour, George Benson. The group Fourplay has Larry Carlton in it, I believe. Other groups are Rippingtons, Spyro Gyra and Acoustic Alchemy.

But personally, all that stuff is very lightweight. If you want to play some REAL modern jazz guitar, forget all these guys and check out Pat Metheny. He is a great player and top notch composer of creative and accessible jazz music with world flavor.

Suspended has some great smooth jazz guitarists suggestions. If your gonna learn any form of jazz guitar though... you gotta branch out your interests... never hurts to have a wide range of music at your disposal. don't forget oldies like wes montogmery, freddie green(his rythmn guitar), rienhart, joe pass, charlie christian...etc... if your looking for pieces, start out with the jazz standards. for scales, learn all the modes(major modes, harmonic minor modes... etc) and how they fit in jazz chord theory.
