White Plains is OK. It's in Westchester County, which is a very pretty place -- incredibly scenic, in the Lower Hudson Valley. It's a nice, short, convenient commuter train ride into NYC. Westchester and the other counties in the Hudson Valley have got cultural events, arts, historical sites, plenty of good restaurants, plus the gorgeous scenery and proximity to New York. I lived in Rockland County for awhile, which is on the other side of the Hudson. I was not altogether crazy about being a single person in the suburbs because I really do want stuff to do, but given the proximity to NYC and the fact there is stuff to do in the Hudson Valley, it's a better suburb for singletons than some other places I can think of. It's true apartments are expensive in that area but I bet you can find something; I managed to.

White Plains, NY is a beautiful family town. There's plenty of shopping, movies, and it's close enough to New York City for you to enjoy the Big City. But if you're looking for night life and a place to meet people (men), more often than not you'll have to traipse into New York City and that's a 45 minute drive (or more) from the City. If you decide to move to White Plains, buy a car, otherwise, you'll be stuck out in the burbs. The nice thing about White Plains is it's a marked change from busy NYC but still close enough to benefit from the activities in the City.

White Plains is a decent place to work and live. It's got a train station to get you to the city, so that's convenient. People are good, but there isn't a lot of night life. Not too many apartments, but they can be found if you take the time to do a good search. It's pretty expensive, though. Not sure where you're relocating from, but if you're not used to the NY way of life it can be a shocker.

The most expensive apts are in the 2 new skyscrapers in City Center, off Main St. oppisite city hall. Still under constructions are 2 more apt/hotel skyscrapers on Main St. @ Mamaroneck Ave. Other apts along North Broadway (on the east {same side as Pace} just south of Pace University Law School), garden apts along the west side of North Broadway up to I-287 (about a mile), Lake St., Stewart Place, south on Mamaroneck Ave opposite CVS.
