OK, so I think of myself as somewhat of an expert on extreme weather, since I lived 30 years of my life in N.E. Wisconsin, 1 year in Boston, and 3 years in Bullhead City AZ (one of the hottest cities in the U.S.) So, for cold weather (like we have been having hear in Wisconsin lately with temps 20 below or worse), I firmly believe that gloves suck and mittens are the way to go. Mittens are warmer than gloves (of like material/construction) because having the fingers together is advantage.

The problem is, I can never find good mittens for my 5 year old daughter. This has been a problem year after year, even when I look for them early in the season (October/November). They seem to be somewhat easier to find in the boys section, but still pretty scarce.

I even looked on Ebay, and the selection is pretty pathetic there too. Where can you find so warm childrens' mittens (preferrably water resistant) for a fair price!?! This is insane!

P.S. I think that over $15 for a pair of mitten plus tack on S&H charges is insane for a child who is just going to lose them in a couple of days anyway! Any people who do purchasing for stores like Walmart, Shopko, Kohls, Target, etc. out there??? Hear my plea.... stock warm mittens!

Northern Canada - just got through -38C [-50 with the windchill] WEEK so I know cold.

You have a few options. Walmart in the fall when mittens first come out. Please Mum had some pretty pink ones this year - http://www.pleasemum.com. Catalog shopping [arctic adventure catalogs]. Some of the nicest mitts for OUR nutty winters I have found around Christmas time in the mall! [those little booths]

Other ideas are lamb farms - I have bought a lot from http://www.eglifarm.com/ - wool is ALWAYS warmer. Just remember - if you're not buying in the offseason you will pay more for good quality. You're not buying disposable 99 cent magic gloves! They even sell MUFFS!!!

Sometimes if you can find a bigger snowmobile shop or sports store you can find great kids size warm mitts - in PINK!

You might have to resign yourself to buying Canadian :P But wow we know cold!

I live in MN and have the same problem with my 1 1/2 year old. She outgrew the baby ones and I couldn't find anything but gloves that fit her. I finally broke down and learned to knit (trust me, I am not a crafty person AT ALL)!!! :o) Now I can just make her new mittens (you have to sew a liner in) whenever she outgrows them! There are some pretty easy patterns on the internet or at a local craft store.

I have had the same problem and found some at Walmart (of all places). They say on the package that they are made with the best thermal insulators and they are weather resistant. They are for boys, but they had other colors. I was just there about 2 weeks ago. Now, my son keeps telling me about other kids at school with the exact mittens. Maybe someone should clue in the retailers! Best of luck.

I HAVE had that problem and you know where I've found the best mittens (with Thermolite)? Target. PLUS they still had some in stock just a couple of weeks ago so they don't just sell out by November or December. You might also check Old Navy? Additional places to look include online at llbean.com, hannaannderson.com, and landsend.com.

I know what you mean! What's the deal with all the gloves? I wish I could help but I will suggest that whenever you do find mittens that are reasonably priced, by multiple pairs - stock up on them. You can always give them to friends and family who have small children as your child outgrows them and you'll always have more than one set on hand. Good luck!
