tattoos are just like anything else, alcohol, cursing, drugs, sweets, everybody has something that they love and some people just don't understand why they do or don't agree with their reasoning for having/doing them. people aren't born with tattoos so a lot of people don't understand why someone would want to permanently alter their appearance when they were perfectly fine before. other people remember a time when tattoos were only had by bikers and sailors. today there is a different group of people who are getting tattooed but some people still have that same mold in mind of a tattooed person.

People can use religious reasons to justify their dislike, but you've also got to realize that even though the first tattoo shop in America opened in New York City in 1890, tattoos were not socially acceptable until fairly recently...In the past tattoos were the purvey of sailors, soldiers, and criminals. A full body suit was such a rare thing that a person who had one could earn a rather good living for himself. And WOMEN having tattoos...unheard of outside of the freak shows. Most people who feel tattoos are taboo are the last holdout of that generation or they had the same beliefs drilled into them by their parents. It's only been with the last twenty years or so that tattoos have become more mainstream.

You said taboo and not personal preference, so I am answering it that way.
1. against their religion
2. close minded/ditto head- told that people that got them are not "good" people, they have loose morals or criminal intent... and they won't open their eyes and see the truth that all sorts of people get tats for all reasons.
3. Afraid of what others may think or say if they get one.
4. their jobs (professional ballet/ other dancer or model) do not allow them to.
5. just so outside of their comfort zone and life experience that they could not even consider it as an alternative or a form of expression.

Because tattoos not too long ago before becoming wide fashion, where mostly made while in jail, witch is why some people still see criminal behavior in the fact of holding a tattoo.

i think people are kind of freaked out by the idea of "carving" your skin and filling it in with ink, you know... everybody's different, but if i concidered it taboo (which i don't, not really), that would be my reason.

I don't want a tattoo because it's so permanent unless you want to go through the pain and money to get it removed. I would be afraid that if I got one I would change my mind and decide I don't want it. My dad also says the bible tells you that you should not mutilate your body and I guess that is a form of mutilation.

Some think it's just ridiculous to get something that's permanent, as you might change your mind later in life. Others, it's against their religion.
